How Much Does It Cost to Install an EV Charger at Home?

EV charger installation cost varies more than almost any other residential electrical job, and the reason is simple: most of the price is not the charger. It is the distance from your panel, the capacity of that panel, and how the cable has to get from one to the other.

Two houses on the same street can receive quotes that differ substantially, and both can be entirely legitimate. This page explains what actually drives the number, what a proper quote should itemise, and how to compare two quotes without simply picking the lower one.

What You Are Actually Paying For

A complete Level 2 installation includes:

  • The load calculation confirming your service can carry the charger.
  • A dedicated 240-volt circuit, sized to 125% of the charger’s draw because it is a continuous load.
  • The breaker and any panel work needed to land it.
  • Cable and conduit from the panel to the charger location.
  • Mounting and terminating the charger itself.
  • The ESA notification, which is mandatory for every hardwired charger in Ontario.
  • The inspection and the resulting Certificate of Inspection.

The charger unit itself may or may not be included, depending on whether you supply it. Many homeowners buy their own. Either approach is fine, but the quote should state clearly which one it assumes.

The Five Things That Move the Price

1. Distance from panel to charger. The single biggest variable. A charger mounted on the other side of the wall from the panel is a fraction of the work of one at the far end of a detached garage.

2. Whether your panel has capacity. If the load calculation passes, the job is straightforward. If it does not, you are adding either a load-management device or a service upgrade, and the scope changes entirely.

3. Concealed versus surface-run cable. Running conduit along an unfinished basement ceiling is quick. Fishing cable through finished walls, or trenching out to a detached garage, is not.

4. Indoor versus outdoor. Exterior installations need weather-rated equipment and proper sealing, and usually a longer run.

5. Panel condition. A clean modern panel with spare slots is simple. A full panel, an obsolete make, or one with existing defects means work before the charger circuit can be added at all.

Scenarios, Simplest to Most Involved

  • Attached garage, panel on the adjoining wall, spare capacity. The least expensive case — short run, no panel work.
  • Attached garage, longer interior run. More cable and labour, still straightforward.
  • Capacity is tight, load-management device added. A modest addition that normally costs far less than upgrading the service.
  • Subpanel required. Needed when breaker spaces have run out; sits above load management in cost.
  • Detached garage requiring a trench. Excavation and a long underground run make this one of the more involved jobs.
  • Full 200-amp service upgrade required. The largest scope, and the one most worth doing properly if a heat pump or a second EV is likely.

How to Compare Two Quotes Properly

A quote you can actually trust states, in writing:

  • Whether the ESA permit fee is included.
  • Whether the charger unit is supplied or homeowner-provided.
  • The circuit size and cable type being installed.
  • Whether a load calculation has genuinely been performed, or merely assumed.
  • Whether panel work, load management, or a subpanel is in scope or excluded.
  • Who schedules the ESA inspection.

A single-line quote with one number tells you nothing about what was left out. In practice, the cheapest quote is very often the one that excluded the panel work — which then reappears as a change order once the job is already underway.

Rebates and Incentives

Incentive programs for home charging equipment come and go, and eligibility conditions change. Federal, provincial, and individual utility programs have all existed at various points, sometimes covering the charger, sometimes the installation, sometimes both.

Check the current programs before you purchase rather than after, because most require applications to be made in a particular order. No electrician can promise you a rebate, but the paperwork usually requires the ESA Certificate of Inspection — which is one more reason the permit matters.

Because so much depends on your specific panel, your specific run, and your specific garage, an accurate quote requires seeing the installation. Anyone quoting a firm price over the phone without asking about your panel and the distance to the charger location is guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the charger itself included in an installation quote?
It depends on the contractor, and on whether you have already bought one. Either way the quote should say clearly which it assumes, so you are comparing like with like.

Does every installation need an ESA permit?
Every hardwired EV charger in Ontario does. The notification is filed by the licensed contractor, the work is inspected, and a Certificate of Inspection is issued.

Is a plug-in charger cheaper than hardwired?
The receptacle installation is broadly comparable, because the circuit is the same work. A licensed electrician is still required to install the receptacle, and it still has to be filed with ESA.

Why is a detached garage so much more involved?
It normally requires an underground run, which means trenching, correct burial depth, and often a subpanel at the far end.

Can I reduce the cost by doing part of it myself?
Not the electrical work. What you can do is choose a charger location close to the panel wherever practical, which is the single most effective way to keep the scope down.
