Electrical Repairs

A breaker that keeps tripping, an outlet that went dead, lights that flicker every time the furnace starts — these are the three calls we get most, and each one is a symptom, not the fault itself. This page covers what causes them, what electrical repairs cost in Toronto, and which repairs legally need a licensed electrician.

What Electrical Repairs Cost in Toronto

Expect $95-$150 per hour for a licensed Toronto electrician, with most service calls carrying a $150-$250 minimum. Diagnostic time is billed hourly because nobody can quote a fixed price on a fault that has not been found yet.

We diagnose first, then quote the repair as a flat price before work starts — no surprise invoice at the door.

Common Electrical Repairs We Handle

Most residential electrical repairs trace back to a short list of causes:

  • Breaker keeps tripping — overloaded circuit, ground fault, or a breaker that has worn out.
  • Dead outlet — usually a tripped GFCI upstream, a loose back-stabbed connection, or a broken shared neutral.
  • Flickering or dimming lights — a loose neutral, a corroded connection, or an undersized service feed sagging when a large appliance starts.
  • Warm switch, outlet, or panel — heat means arcing. Shut the circuit off and call.
  • Buzzing panel or burning smell — an emergency, not a maintenance item.

When an Electrical Repair Is an Emergency

Burning smells, sparks, scorch marks, a hot panel, or water contacting wiring all mean power off at the main and an electrician on site the same day. A dead circuit, a bad switch, or a single nuisance trip can be booked normally. If it cannot wait, use our 24/7 emergency electrical service.

Which Repairs Need an ESA Permit

Under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, replacing a fixture or receptacle with an identical device is exempt — but replacing a breaker inside a service box is not. That work requires an ESA notification filed by a licensed contractor, as does any new circuit, altered wiring, or panel change.

Skipping the notification is a code violation and can void a home insurance claim after a fire. Every repair we do is filed and inspected under our ECRA/ESA licence.

Repeat Repairs Usually Point at the Panel

If breakers trip across several circuits, or lights dim whenever the dryer or air conditioner kicks in, another repair is not the answer — the service is undersized. A 60 or 100 amp panel running an EV charger, heat pump, and modern kitchen is past its limit, and a panel upgrade ends the cycle.

Why DIY Electrical Repairs Backfire

A repair that looks finished can still be wrong. Reversed polarity, an undersized conductor, or a terminal left a half-turn loose all pass a plug-in tester and still overheat behind the drywall. ESA’s Ontario Electrical Safety Report ties electrical distribution equipment — panels, breakers, and wiring — to hundreds of loss fires in Ontario each year.

Electrical Repair FAQ

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

It is doing its job. A repeat trip means an overload, a ground fault, or a failing breaker — resetting it hides a fault that is still live in the wall.

Can you do same-day electrical repairs?

Yes. Emergencies get same-day dispatch across Toronto and the GTA; standard repairs are usually booked within a day or two.

Is a dead outlet a big problem?

Not always, but it is never nothing. It is a broken connection somewhere on the circuit, and a loose connection is what generates heat.
