What Happens If Hot and Neutral Wires Are Reversed?
Plug an outlet tester into a receptacle and get “reversed polarity” as the result, and you have found one of the most common but under-appreciated wiring mistakes in Ontario homes. It looks like the outlet works normally. It is not normal. This guide covers what happens when hot and neutral wires are reversed, why it is a real safety issue, how to spot it, and what to do in a Toronto or GTA home.
What happens if hot and neutral wires are reversed?
When hot and neutral are swapped at an outlet, appliances plugged in still power on because they only need voltage between the two conductors. But now the switch or fuse inside the appliance no longer controls the hot side, the appliance chassis and internal components stay energized even when the appliance appears “off,” GFCI protection may not work correctly, and any exposed metal downstream can carry line voltage to ground. Reversed polarity is a code defect under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and a real shock and fire hazard.
Why it is dangerous even though everything “works”
Appliance switches no longer break the hot side. A lamp switched off with reversed polarity has line voltage sitting at the bulb socket rim. Change the bulb without unplugging and you can be shocked.
Screw shells on lamp sockets are energized instead of neutral. Anyone touching the metal shell while grounded (bare feet on a wet floor) can be shocked.
Appliance chassis grounds may not work correctly. Ground fault paths can carry current.
GFCI protection is compromised. GFCIs measure the imbalance between hot and neutral. Reversed polarity can cause misdiagnosed trips or missed faults.
Fires from partial insulation failure are more likely, because internal switches are not breaking the hot conductor.
Electronic devices with power-supply components can experience premature failure from the incorrect internal polarity.
How reversed polarity happens
DIY outlet swap with black and white conductors landed on the wrong terminals.

Cable pulled through the box with hot and neutral swapped at a previous device or junction.
Old wiring where colours were re-identified incorrectly.

Non-contact voltage tester at a switched-off lamp. If the lamp’s screw shell reads live when the switch is off, polarity is likely reversed.

Every homeowner should own a plug-in outlet tester. They cost less than dinner and detect the majority of common wiring faults in seconds.
The correct wiring, in plain terms
Hot (black conductor): lands on the brass (gold-coloured) screw terminal of the outlet.
Neutral (white conductor): lands on the silver (nickel-coloured) screw terminal.
Ground (bare copper or green): lands on the green ground screw.
Remember: brass = black, silver = white, green = green. That mnemonic prevents the most common wiring reversal.
How to fix reversed polarity
Kill power at the breaker. Verify with a non-contact voltage tester.
Remove the outlet from the box.
Identify hot (black) and neutral (white) conductors. Verify with a meter under power in a separate step if there is any confusion, then kill power again before reworking.
Land black on brass, white on silver, ground on green.
Torque all terminals to spec.
Set the outlet, restore power, and verify with a plug-in tester.
Walk downstream outlets on the same circuit — sometimes the reversal is upstream and multiple outlets read reversed.
If a homeowner is not confident with panel-adjacent work, or if the reversal is on a rental or non-owner-occupied property, an ECRA/ESA-licensed contractor should do the fix.
When reversal is upstream, not at the outlet
Sometimes an outlet reads reversed but the reversal actually happened in a junction box upstream. Rewiring the outlet alone “corrects” the tester reading but leaves the upstream junction wrong. If you fix one outlet and downstream outlets now read reversed, or the fix does not stick, the fault is upstream and the whole circuit needs to be traced. This is where a licensed contractor’s diagnostic experience saves hours.
Related common miswirings to check while you are testing
Bootleg ground. Neutral bonded to ground at the outlet to fake a grounded circuit. Dangerous.
Open neutral. Neutral conductor not connected; the outlet may power some appliances weirdly.
Reversed with open ground. The worst combo.
