Tracing wires inside walls without opening drywall is possible with the right tools. The most reliable method is a professional wire tracer (tone generator and probe), which injects a signal onto the wire at one end and allows you to follow the signal through the wall with the probe. Stud finders with AC wire detection can also locate live wires but cannot distinguish between different circuits. For NMD cable in wood-frame walls, a cable tracer gives much more accurate routing information than simply guessing from outlet and switch positions.
Tone tracers work well on de-energized conductors. On live circuits, the AC signal interferes with the trace signal and reduces accuracy. The best practice is to turn off the circuit at the panel before tracing. If you need to locate wires before cutting or drilling, EZSMART can trace circuits and provide an assessment of the wiring layout in your home before you start any renovation work.
