    Is It Safe to Use Water Around Electrical Outlets?

    Water and electricity make for the oldest safety warning in every home, and outlets are where the two are most likely to meet. Cleaning near a receptacle, a flooding basement, a bathroom counter splash, or a leaking window above a plug all raise the same question: is it actually safe to use water around electrical outlets? The short answer is no. This guide explains why, what to do if it happens anyway, and what the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires in every wet area.

    Is water around electrical outlets safe?

    No. Even outlets with faceplates on are not sealed against water, and any moisture that reaches an energized conductor creates a shock and fire risk. In wet or damp areas, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires GFCI protection precisely because water and 120 volts do not mix. Keep water and outlets apart when you can, and when you cannot, make sure the outlet is GFCI-protected and rated for the location.

    What can happen when water hits an outlet

    Household outlets sit at 120 volts, more than enough to injure or kill a person under the right circumstances. Water lowers skin resistance and provides a path for current between the hot conductor and anything grounded, including you. The likely outcomes are:

    • Shock or electrocution if someone touches the wet outlet or an appliance plugged into it.
    • Short circuit between the hot and neutral conductors, which either trips the breaker or sparks depending on the fault current.
    • Arcing inside the box, which can char insulation, damage the receptacle, or ignite nearby combustibles.
    • Corrosion of the copper contacts inside the outlet, causing progressive overheating months later.
    • Ground fault that energizes appliance chassis, faucets, or nearby metal fixtures.

    What to do if an outlet gets wet

    1. Do not touch it. If any part of your body is wet, do not touch anything electrical.
    2. Kill the breaker feeding that outlet at the panel. Not sure which one? Flip the main. See how to safely turn off power.
    3. Only after the circuit is dead, unplug anything that is plugged into the outlet.
    4. Let it dry completely. Air-dry for 24 to 48 hours in a warm dry room. Do not use a hair dryer inside the box — it forces moisture deeper into the drywall.
    5. Have it inspected by an ESA-licensed electrician before re-energizing. Water damage to a receptacle is usually invisible from the front.
    6. Replace the outlet if it was submerged, if there is any staining on the plastic, or if the box shows corrosion. Do not just dry and re-use.

    Where the Ontario code requires GFCI protection

    The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires GFCI-protected outlets in every area of a home where water is likely to be present. The list, at time of writing, includes:

    If your home was built before those rules, retrofitting GFCI outlets is a quick and inexpensive upgrade. Any single-gang box can be converted in under fifteen minutes by a licensed electrician.

    Cleaning around outlets and appliances safely

    Everyday cleaning is fine as long as you follow a few simple rules:

    • Wipe the faceplate with a dry or damp cloth, never a soaking one.
    • Do not spray cleaner directly at an outlet or switch. Spray onto the cloth first.
    • Unplug any appliance before wiping around its cord entry.
    • Never mop directly at the base of a floor outlet.
    • Keep countertop appliances such as coffee makers and kettles at least a few inches away from receptacles so splashes cannot travel.
    • If you use a steam cleaner, keep the nozzle away from outlets and switches.

    Flooding, leaks, and outdoor water

    Any basement flood that reaches the height of an outlet is a whole-panel event, not a single-receptacle one. Kill power at the main and call a licensed electrician before you enter the wet area. Reach into the panel from a dry position only. If you cannot safely get to the main disconnect, call the utility.

    The Electrical Safety Authority’s Ontario Electrical Safety Report consistently identifies water-related electrical incidents as a leading cause of shock injuries in the province. Almost all of those incidents involved outlets or appliances in wet areas without GFCI protection.

A dead GFCI is worse than no GFCI because it feels like protection and is not.
