How to Replace an Electric Stove Cord

How to Replace an Electric Stove Cord

Electric stoves in Canada use either a 3-wire or 4-wire connection. Newer installations require a 4-wire cord (hot, hot, neutral, ground) under the Canadian Electrical Code, while older homes may have a 3-wire outlet (hot, hot, neutral — with neutral doubling as ground). When replacing a stove cord, match the cord type to the outlet at the wall. Do not replace a 4-wire outlet with a 3-wire cord — this removes the dedicated equipment ground and is not code-compliant for new installations.

Replacing a 4-Wire Stove Cord

  • Disconnect power at the breaker before touching the terminal block at the back of the stove
  • Remove the back panel to access the terminal block — usually 2-4 screws
  • Note the existing wire positions: two hots go to the outer terminals, neutral goes to the center terminal, ground connects to the green screw or the stove chassis
  • On a 4-wire cord, the red and black wires are the two hots, white is neutral, and green is ground — connect green to the chassis ground screw, not the neutral terminal
  • On a 3-wire cord, the neutral terminal must be bonded to the chassis with the bonding strap (typically a metal link or bare wire) — confirm the strap is in place
  • Secure the cord with the strain relief clamp before restoring power

Upgrading the Outlet

If the wall outlet is a 3-wire NEMA 10-30 or 10-50 and you want to upgrade to 4-wire, a Licensed Electrical Contractor must run a new cable with a dedicated ground from the panel to the range location. This requires an ESA permit. EZSMART handles range circuit upgrades and appliance outlet installations across Ontario.
