    Can I Install My Own EV Charger?

    EV chargers are one of the fastest-growing residential electrical installations in Ontario, and every GTA homeowner who just bought an EV has asked the same question — can I install my own EV charger and save the electrician fee? The short answer sits at the intersection of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, the Electrical Safety Authority’s homeowner scope, and the utility policies that apply to load additions. This guide walks Ontario homeowners through whether you can install your own EV charger, where the line is drawn, and what a typical GTA install costs when done properly.

    Short answer: technically yes with an ESA notification; practically almost never worth it

    Direct answer: an owner-occupant of a single-family home can file an ESA Homeowner Wiring Notification and install a Level 2 EV charger themselves, provided the work follows the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and passes inspection. In practice, the load calculation, cable sizing, and panel work involved push most homeowners toward hiring a licensed contractor — and the difference in total cost is often only $200-400.

    What the install actually involves

    • Load calculation. The OESC Section 8 calc confirms the panel can support the new EV charger load. A 32 A charger on a 100 A panel typically requires load management or a service upgrade.
    • Circuit sizing. A 32 A charger needs a 40 A breaker and 8 AWG copper cable. A 40 A charger needs 50 A / 6 AWG. Continuous-load rating adds 25%.
    • Panel space. A double-pole breaker (240 V) needs two open slots. If the panel is full, a subpanel or panel upgrade is required first.
    • Cable run. Cable from panel to charger location, secured every 1.4 m and within 300 mm of every box.
    • Charger mounting. Wall bracket, weatherproof if outdoors, ground-fault protection built into the charger itself.
    • Termination. Charger to conductor via lug terminals inside a listed enclosure. Equipment bond continuous through the whole install.
    • Filing and inspection. ESA notification, inspection appointment, sign-off.

    Why the load calc is the deal-breaker

    Direct answer: most homeowners cannot legally sign off on the load calculation themselves — the OESC Section 8 calc is typically done by a licensed contractor or engineer. Without the calc, the ESA inspector will not approve the install, and the utility (Toronto Hydro, Alectra, Hydro One) will not accept the new load if it changes service capacity.

    What if your panel does not have capacity?

    • Load management device (DCC-9 by RVE, PowerX by ChargePoint, Tesla Wall Connector with load sharing) automatically throttles the charger when other loads run. Adds $250-400 to the install and often avoids a panel upgrade.
    • Subpanel gives a dedicated home for the EV charger circuit. Costs $1,500-2,500 in the GTA. Our post on subpanels covers when this is the right answer.

    What a typical GTA EV charger install costs

    • Straightforward install (panel has capacity, garage close to panel): $650-1,200 including permit and inspection.
    • With load management device: $900-1,600.
    • With subpanel: $2,200-3,700.
    • With 200 A service upgrade: $4,500-7,000.

    Homeowners doing it themselves save the contractor labour — typically $300-500 of the total. Not a huge difference, and it comes with the risk of an inspection failure. Many customers save the small labour difference for peace of mind on the largest single load in the home.

    What is definitely NOT homeowner-permitted

    • Service entrance work upstream of the main breaker.
    • Meter socket modification or replacement.
    • Utility drop coordination.
    • Panel replacement (see our post on homeowner panel scope).
    • Any work while power is live at the panel busbar.

    Common mistakes on DIY EV charger installs we correct

    • Undersized breaker — 32 A charger on a 30 A breaker trips constantly. Correct is 40 A.
    • Wrong cable gauge — 10 AWG for a 40 A charger is a fire risk. Correct is 8 AWG minimum for continuous 32 A.
    • Missing GFCI protection — many chargers have GFCI built-in; some require breaker-side GFCI. Check the product data sheet.
    • Outdoor charger without weatherproof enclosure — outdoor installs need NEMA 3R or 4X rated enclosures.
    • No load calc filed — the entire install fails inspection without documented calc.

Homeowners with a 100 A panel and a new EV assume they need a service upgrade to 200 A. In fact, a $300 load management module often eliminates the need, letting the panel handle both existing loads and the charger. Every ChargePoint, Emporia, Tesla, and Wallbox model supports load sharing or load management. Talk to your electrician about the module before you commit to a $4,500 service upgrade. For many GTA homes, the module is the difference between a Friday-afternoon EV install and a three-week service-upgrade project.
