    How to Install a Ring Doorbell on an Old Wired Chime?

    The Ring Video Doorbell is one of the most popular smart-home add-ons in the GTA, and homeowners with existing wired doorbells assume the swap will take five minutes. Usually it does, but older Ontario doorbell setups sometimes fight back — low transformer voltage, incompatible chimes, or wire runs that were never sized for a device that needs continuous 16 V AC. This guide walks GTA homeowners through how to install a Ring doorbell on an old wired chime, what compatibility checks matter, and when to use the Ring Pro Power Kit vs a new transformer.

    Short answer: hook to existing chime wires, add the Pro Power Kit, done

    Direct answer: turn off the doorbell breaker, remove the old wired doorbell button, connect the Ring to the two existing doorbell wires, install the Ring Pro Power Kit inside the mechanical chime box, restore power, and connect via the Ring app. Time: 20-40 minutes.

    What the Ring needs to work with a wired chime

    • 16-24 V AC transformer — the same low-voltage transformer that powered your old doorbell. Older transformers were often 10 V, which is not enough.
    • Existing wire run from transformer to chime to button. Two conductors, usually 18 AWG.
    • Mechanical or digital chime. Both types work with Ring, but wiring differs.
    • Ring Pro Power Kit (included in most Ring boxes) — provides the small capacitor and diode network that lets the Ring draw continuous power while the chime remains silent between rings.

    Step-by-step: the swap

    1. Turn off the breaker feeding the doorbell transformer. Usually the transformer is in the basement or the closet near the furnace, sometimes attached to a junction box.
    2. Verify power is off with a non-contact voltage tester at the transformer or the button.
    3. Remove the old button. Two small screws hold it to the door frame. Note the two wires attached.
    4. Install the Ring mounting bracket. Level it, mark holes, drill if needed (masonry drill bit for brick).
    5. Connect the two doorbell wires to the two Ring bracket terminals. Polarity does not matter on AC.
    6. Snap the Ring onto the bracket. Secure with the small locking screw.
    7. Open the mechanical chime box inside the house.
    8. Install the Ring Pro Power Kit across the FRONT and TRANS terminals of the chime (Ring’s instruction card shows the exact terminals for your chime brand).
    9. Restore power at the breaker.
    10. Set up in the Ring app. Scan the QR code inside the Ring, connect to Wi-Fi, name the device.
    11. Test. Press the button. Chime rings, and phone app shows the video.

    When the chime does not ring

    • Transformer voltage too low. Measure with your multimeter across the chime’s FRONT and TRANS terminals. Should be 16-24 V AC. If under 12 V, upgrade the transformer to a 16 V or 24 V unit ($20-40 at any GTA hardware store).
    • Power Kit wired incorrectly. Reverse the two Kit leads on the chime terminals.
    • Digital chime instead of mechanical. Digital chimes (electronic “ding-dong” units) usually need a different setup. Ring’s app will detect and offer a digital chime workaround.
    • Broken chime. Test the old system before you install the Ring — press the old button, confirm the chime sounds. If it does not, the chime or the transformer was already dead.

    When to upgrade the transformer

    Direct answer: any transformer under 16 V AC needs upgrading before installing a Ring doorbell. Old 8 V or 10 V transformers in pre-1980 Ontario homes are common and will not power the Ring reliably. A replacement 16 V / 30 VA transformer costs $25 and installs at the same junction box as the old one.

    Transformer swap is homeowner-permitted work under an ESA Homeowner Wiring Notification if you have one filed. If you are only swapping the doorbell button and leaving the transformer alone, no notification is required — it counts as maintenance.

    Battery vs wired Ring

    Direct answer: if your existing doorbell wiring is dead or non-existent, consider a battery-powered Ring (2nd generation or Video Doorbell 4) instead of pulling new wire. Battery Rings work with any door and any home, with the tradeoff that you charge the battery every few months.

    Battery Rings can also work alongside the existing wired chime by using the chime as a solenoid or via a Ring Chime accessory that plugs into an outlet inside the house. Read the specific model’s compatibility page.

    Common installation mistakes

    • Skipping the Power Kit — the chime buzzes constantly or the Ring reboots randomly.
    • Wrong terminals on the chime — the Ring works but the chime never rings.
    • Loose wire nut on the chime side — intermittent operation.
    • Chime placed too far from Wi-Fi — the Ring is at the door, but weak signal at the button end causes disconnects.
    • Skipping the transformer voltage check — the Ring appears to work then fails after a few weeks.

    In our experience installing Ring doorbells across GTA homes — particularly older Toronto detached homes with original 8 V transformers — the single most common failure mode is the transformer. The Ring appears to work at install, then reboots overnight, then loses Wi-Fi, then finally becomes unresponsive. Every one of those symptoms traces back to inadequate transformer voltage. When we do the install, we test the transformer voltage BEFORE mounting the Ring — if it reads under 16 V we swap the transformer as a package deal. Saves the customer a callback in three weeks. Ten minutes of multimeter work up front eliminates the failure mode.
