How to Extend a Wire That Is Too Short in the Box

When a wire inside an electrical box is too short to make a proper connection, the correct solution is to add a short extension wire — called a pigtail — using an approved wire connector. The Canadian Electrical Code requires a minimum of 150 mm (about 6 inches) of free conductor from the front edge of the box for safe working length. A wire that is too short is a common finding in older homes and during renovations where boxes have been repositioned.

The Correct Method

• Turn off the circuit at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wires
• Cut a short extension wire (pigtail) of the same gauge as the existing wire, approximately 200–250 mm long
• Strip both the short existing wire and the new pigtail about 12–15 mm
• Splice them together using a wire nut or Wago lever connector — do not use tape alone
• Ensure the splice is fully inside the electrical box, not outside or in the wall cavity
• The box cover must remain accessible — no splices are permitted inside walls or ceilings without an accessible junction box

When to Call a Licensed Electrician

If the existing wire is so short it cannot be safely gripped or stripped, or if it is aluminum wiring requiring special connectors, or if the box itself needs to be repositioned, a Licensed Electrical Contractor should assess and perform the work. Improperly extended wires in boxes are a leading cause of connection failures and overheating. Any extension to a circuit — as opposed to a repair within the same box — requires an ESA permit.
