How to Bury Electrical Wire Safely in the Yard

Burying electrical wire in the yard requires using the correct cable type, digging to the required depth, and obtaining an ESA permit before starting work. All underground electrical installations must be performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor in Ontario. The work must be inspected by the ESA before the trench is backfilled — burying the wire before inspection means the trench will have to be reopened.

Step-by-Step Process

• Call Ontario One Call (1-800-400-2255) or visit ontarioonecall.ca to locate underground utilities — mandatory before any digging
• Obtain an ESA permit through a Licensed Electrical Contractor before starting work
• Dig the trench to the required depth: 600 mm for direct-buried TECK cable, 450 mm for PVC conduit
• Prepare the trench bed with sand or fine soil free of sharp rocks for direct-buried cable
• Install warning tape 150–300 mm above the cable for future excavation protection
• Leave the trench open and call for an ESA inspection before backfilling
• Backfill only after inspection approval, tamping gently to avoid damaging the cable

Cable Selection

Type TECK cable (thermoplastic-insulated, ethylene-propylene rubber, corrugated aluminum sheath) is the most common choice for direct burial in Ontario. It is rated for direct burial without additional conduit. Alternatively, conductors can be run in rigid PVC conduit, which allows for easier future replacement or upgrades. Standard NMD90 (Romex) is never acceptable for direct burial — it is not rated for underground use and will fail.
