Why Do My Outlets Smell Like Melting Plastic?

Why Do My Outlets Smell Like Melting Plastic?

A burning plastic smell from an outlet is a warning sign of active overheating inside the outlet body or at the wiring connections behind it. This smell indicates that the insulation on wires, the outlet’s internal plastic components, or both are reaching temperatures high enough to decompose. This is a pre-fire condition that requires immediate action.

Common Causes

  • Loose wire connection: A wire that is not firmly secured at the outlet terminal creates resistance at the connection point. Resistance generates heat proportional to the current flowing through it. Under load, a loose connection can reach several hundred degrees — enough to melt the outlet body and ignite nearby material
  • Overloaded circuit: Running more current through a circuit than its wire gauge is rated for causes the wire insulation to heat along its entire length, but the outlet, being a junction point, is often the first place the heat becomes perceptible
  • Damaged outlet: Outlets that have experienced arcing internally — from a previously faulty plug, a surge, or prolonged use — may have damaged contacts that create resistance on every subsequent connection
  • Backstab connections: Outlets wired using the push-in backstab terminals rather than screw terminals are known to develop loose connections over time, particularly in older Ontario homes where the same outlets have been in service for decades

What to Do

  • Stop using the outlet immediately
  • Turn off the breaker for that circuit
  • Do not restore power until a licensed electrician has inspected the outlet, checked the connections, and replaced the outlet if necessary

EZSMART replaces faulty outlets and inspects the wiring connections behind them across Ontario. A burning smell is not something to monitor — it is a signal that heat damage is already occurring. Contact us to assess and repair the fault.
