What Should I Do If an Outlet Is Sparking?

What Should I Do If an Outlet Is Sparking?

A brief blue spark when you plug in a device is normal — it happens because the appliance draws current the instant the plug contacts the energized terminal, and the small arc is the result of that sudden current flow. This type of spark is harmless. However, large sparks, yellow or white sparks, sparks that persist, or sparks accompanied by a burning smell or discolouration on the outlet face indicate a wiring fault that requires immediate attention.

Normal vs. Abnormal Sparks

  • Normal: Small, brief, blue spark when plugging in a high-draw appliance (vacuum, hair dryer, space heater). Stops immediately when the connection is made. No smell, no discolouration
  • Abnormal: Large spark, yellow or white in colour, lasts more than an instant, accompanied by popping sound, burning smell, or scorch marks on the outlet face
  • Abnormal: Sparking that occurs at an outlet when nothing is being plugged in — this indicates arcing inside the outlet or at the wiring connection, which can ignite the wall cavity without warning

What to Do

  • Stop using the outlet immediately if the spark was large, persistent, or accompanied by a smell
  • Turn off the breaker controlling that outlet to de-energize it
  • Do not attempt to open the outlet yourself — the connections behind the face are energized even with the appliance unplugged until the breaker is off
  • Have a licensed electrician inspect and replace the outlet and check the connections behind it for loose wiring or heat damage

EZSMART replaces faulty outlets and inspects wiring connections across Ontario. If your outlet sparked abnormally, contact us to assess and repair the fault before it becomes a fire.
