Can You Run Power to an Island Through the Floor?

A kitchen island with no wall behind it still needs power for outlets, and sometimes for a cooktop or a prep-sink disposal, in a Toronto or GTA renovation. With no adjacent wall to run cable through, the floor is almost always the answer. This guide covers how that actually works on both a wood-framed floor and a concrete slab.

Can you run power to an island through the floor?

Yes, running power to a kitchen island through the floor is the standard method in Ontario when no adjacent wall is available. On a wood-framed floor, cable runs through the joist bays below (same drilling and support rules as any joist crossing) and rises into a floor box or up through the island’s base cabinet. On a concrete slab, the feed typically comes from below in a basement or crawlspace, or is set into the slab during construction with conduit, since retrofitting a slab after the fact means either coring through it or running conduit along the surface into the island base.

Wood-framed floor: the common renovation case

  1. From the basement or crawlspace below, locate the joist bay under the planned island location.
  2. Drill through the joists en route, following the same centre-of-joist, edge-clearance, and nail-plate rules as any other joist crossing — see how to run wire across a ceiling joist.
  3. Bring the cable up through the subfloor at the exact point the island’s electrical box will sit, before the finished floor and cabinetry go down.
  4. Install a floor box (a listed enclosure specifically rated for in-floor electrical use) flush with the finished floor, or route the cable up inside the island cabinet base if the box will be mounted inside the cabinet rather than in the floor itself.
  5. Terminate the receptacle or connection inside the island, with GFCI protection where the outlet is accessible for general use.

Timing matters here — this is planned and roughed in before the finished floor and island cabinetry are installed, not added afterward.

Concrete slab: a different problem

  • Planned during construction: conduit is set into the slab before the concrete pour, with a stub-up at the exact island location — the clean, correct approach when building new or doing a full slab-on-grade renovation.
  • Retrofit into an existing slab: either core-drilling through the slab from a basement or crawlspace below (if accessible) and fishing conduit up, or, if there is no access below, saw-cutting a channel in the slab for conduit and patching over it — disruptive but sometimes the only option.
  • Surface-run alternative: if cutting the slab is not feasible, conduit can sometimes run along the surface from the nearest wall to the island base, concealed under new flooring material, though this depends heavily on the specific floor finish and island placement.

What the box and receptacle need to be

  • A listed floor box if the receptacle is mounted flush in the floor itself — rated for foot traffic and the specific flooring material around it.
  • A standard device box inside the island cabinet base if the outlet is mounted at counter height or inside the cabinet rather than in the floor — more common in modern island designs.
  • GFCI protection, since kitchen island receptacles fall under the same wet-area and counter protection requirements as any other kitchen counter outlet.
  • Correct circuit sizing if the island includes a cooktop, which needs a dedicated 240V circuit entirely separate from the general receptacle circuit.
