Yes — but only with the correct staples and at the correct spacing. Securing Romex (NMD90 cable) improperly is one of the most common code violations found during electrical inspections. Romex that is unsupported, over-stapled, or stapled with the wrong fasteners can be damaged, can sag, and creates inspection failures.
Use only cable staples rated for the cable size you are securing — 14/2 and 12/2 use different staple sizes than 10/2 or larger. The staple must hold the cable flat against the framing without crushing or distorting it. Drive the staple so it is snug but not biting into the cable jacket. Over-driven staples that compress the jacket can damage the insulation of the conductors inside.
When Romex runs through drilled holes in studs or joists, no stapling is required because the framing itself supports the cable. When running along the face of framing (surface stapling), the staple spacing rules above apply. Do not run Romex diagonally across framing faces — run it parallel or perpendicular to framing members to keep the cable protected and properly supported.
When Romex passes through a stud or joist within 1.25 inches (32 mm) of the edge, a steel nail guard plate must be installed over the hole to protect the cable from future fasteners — drywall screws, nails, or other penetrations. These plates are inexpensive and required by the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
