An outlet sparking sends a jolt of panic through anyone standing next to it, and rightly so. Sometimes it is harmless static, but sometimes it is the first visible warning of a wire burning behind the drywall. What you do in the first thirty seconds of an outlet sparking is the difference between an easy fix and an electrical fire.
Kill power to that outlet at the breaker panel, unplug whatever you were about to insert, keep your hands off the faceplate, and call an ESA-licensed electrician before you switch the breaker back on. Everything else can wait. A sparking outlet is treated as a live hazard until a licensed contractor confirms otherwise.

A brief blue spark the instant you push a plug in is usually normal. The two contacts snap together while current is already flowing, and that momentary arc is called a load spark. It is over in a fraction of a second, leaves no smell, and does not repeat.
A spark you should worry about is longer, yellow or orange, comes with a hissing or crackling sound, or leaves a burnt smell. If the outlet was sitting idle with nothing being plugged in and it still sparked, treat it as an emergency. Scorch marks, a warm faceplate, a burning smell, or repeated sparking on the same outlet all point to loose wiring or an overheating conductor inside the wall. According to the Electrical Safety Authority’s Ontario Electrical Safety Report, electrical distribution equipment such as wiring and outlets is consistently one of the top ignition sources in residential fires across the province.

If the outlet is on a circuit that also feeds bedrooms, you should be on an AFCI breaker under the current OESC. A working arc fault breaker will often trip before an outlet gets to the point of visibly sparking, so a spark on an AFCI-protected circuit is doubly serious.
Most of the sparking outlets we replace across the GTA trace back to one thing: a loose backstab connection at the rear of the receptacle. The push-in stab holes let a rushed installer wire an outlet in seconds, but the small copper spring behind those holes loosens over years of thermal cycling from every space heater, hair dryer, and kettle plugged in on that circuit. Once the connection loosens, it arcs, then it scorches, then it sparks visibly. When we swap a suspect outlet, we always land the wire on the screw terminals, torque to the manufacturer spec, and pigtail rather than daisy-chain through the receptacle body. A ten-dollar outlet installed the right way outlasts a forty-dollar outlet installed the fast way.
