Electrical Panel Upgrades in York Region
If you live in Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, or Thornhill, your panel upgrade runs through Alectra Utilities rather than Toronto Hydro. That single fact changes the paperwork, the disconnect scheduling, and often the timeline — which is why we keep this separate from our Toronto page.
Alectra Territory: What Is Different
Any change to your incoming service capacity requires the utility to disconnect and reconnect, and each utility runs its own layout review and scheduling queue. Alectra serves Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Thornhill, Aurora, Mississauga, and Brampton. Toronto Hydro serves the City of Toronto, including North York and Scarborough.
Practically, this means the application goes to a different queue with different lead times. We file the Alectra paperwork and the ESA notification together, and we book the disconnect as early in the process as possible, because that scheduling — not the electrical work — is what usually sets your date.
The Housing Stock Here Drives Different Jobs
York Region panel work splits fairly cleanly into two groups, and they are not the same job.
Older Thornhill and central Richmond Hill homes. Post-war and 1960s–70s stock, often on 60A or 100A services, sometimes still with a fuse panel. These are classic full service upgrades, and the mast, meter base, and grounding usually need replacing alongside the panel.
1990s and 2000s Vaughan and Markham subdivisions. Typically already on 100A or 200A with breaker panels in decent condition. Here the constraint is almost never the service size — it is a full panel with no slots left for an EV charger, a hot tub, or a finished basement. That is often a panel replacement or a subpanel, not a service upgrade, and it costs considerably less.
Larger newer homes in Vaughan and Markham with electric heat, a pool, and two EVs are the exception that genuinely needs 200A or more, and we run the load calculation to confirm it rather than assuming.
EV Charging Is the Most Common Trigger
Detached garages and long driveways are common across these municipalities, which makes EV charger installs here more involved than a typical downtown Toronto job — the run length affects conductor sizing and cost as much as the panel does. We assess the charger location and the panel together, because quoting one without the other produces a number that changes later.
What We Handle
Load calculation and site assessment, the ESA notification, the Alectra service application and disconnect booking, the panel and service work itself, and the ESA inspection through to your Certificate of Inspection. You are not the one chasing the utility.
