Knob and Tube and Aluminum Wiring Replacement in North York and Toronto

If your insurer flagged your home, or you just bought an older property, professional knob and tube wiring replacement is often the fix that keeps you covered and safe. EZSMART replaces knob and tube and remediates aluminum wiring in homes across North York and the GTA, fully permitted and ESA-inspected. As a licensed Electrical Contractor (ESA/ECRA #7012690) with 25+ years in older Toronto-area homes, we hand you the ESA Certificate of Acceptance your insurance company needs. Quick answer: why this work matters

Older wiring is the single most common reason Ontario homeowners get an insurance non-renewal letter. Knob and tube and aluminum branch wiring were both code-compliant when installed, but insurers now treat them as elevated fire risks. Replacing or properly remediating them, and getting the work ESA-inspected, restores insurability, removes the safety hazard, and protects your home’s resale value. All of this work legally must be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor and inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA).

What is knob and tube wiring?

Knob and tube (K&T) was the standard residential wiring method in North America from roughly the 1880s to 1950, so it turns up in many century homes and pre-war North York and Toronto neighbourhoods. It is named for the porcelain knobs that anchor the wire to joists and studs and the porcelain tubes that protect it where it passes through wood.

The problems that make insurers nervous:

    • No ground wire. K&T is a two-wire system, so it cannot safely support grounded three-prong outlets that modern electronics expect.
    • Aging insulation. The original rubber or cloth insulation becomes brittle and cracks after decades, exposing conductors.
    • Not built for modern loads. It was designed for lights and a radio, not today’s kitchens, HVAC, and appliances, so it is easily overloaded.
    • Dangerous around insulation. Covering active K&T with blown-in attic insulation traps heat and is an Ontario code violation. The wiring must be removed before insulation is added.

Active vs abandoned knob and tube

Not every strand of K&T triggers the same response. Active (still energized) knob and tube is what insurers and safety inspectors care about. Abandoned K&T, which was disconnected at the panel during a past partial rewire and left in the walls, is generally acceptable to most insurers when it is properly documented. We assess every wire run, identify what is live versus dead, and document it clearly, so you are not paying to remove wiring that does not need to come out.

What is aluminum wiring, and does it need full replacement?

Aluminum branch-circuit wiring was widely installed in homes built roughly between 1965 and 1975. The wire itself is not the core issue; the risk is at the connections. Aluminum expands, contracts, and oxidizes differently than copper, which can loosen terminations at outlets, switches, and junction boxes over time and cause overheating.

The good news is that aluminum wiring replacement does not always mean a full rewire. In many homes the accepted fix is remediation: we install ESA-approved connectors (such as AlumiConn or Ideal AL/CU) at every termination, and replace devices with CO/ALR-rated outlets and switches where required. Where wiring is damaged or a full rewire makes more sense, we will tell you honestly. Either way, you receive documentation for your insurer.

How we do the work with minimal damage

Homeowners picture torn-open walls, but that is rarely necessary. Our approach in older homes:

    1. On-site safety assessment. We inspect your panel, attic, and basement, trace active circuits, and map the scope. You get a clear written assessment, often exactly what your insurer is asking for.
    2. Prioritized, code-compliant plan. We tackle insurance-critical and highest-risk areas first, and lay out full versus partial options.
    3. Plaster-friendly fishing techniques. We route new copper wiring through existing wall and ceiling cavities using cable-fishing methods, keeping access holes to a minimum and protecting heritage finishes.
    4. Modern safety built in. New grounded circuits, plus GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, and exterior locations and AFCI breakers where the current Ontario Electrical Code requires them.
    5. ESA permit, inspection, and certificate. We file the ESA notification, coordinate the inspection, and hand you the Certificate of Acceptance for your insurance and home records.

Most circuits stay powered through the project; where we need to de-energize something we tell you in advance.

Often paired with a panel upgrade

Many older homes still run a 60-amp fuse box, which insurers also flag and which cannot support a fully rewired, modern home. When that is the case, doing the panel upgrade at the same time as the rewire means one permit, one inspection, and one ESA Certificate covering the whole system, less disruption and a cleaner result. We coordinate everything, including any Toronto Hydro scheduling.

    Frequently asked questions

Will my insurance company require knob and tube wiring replacement? Many Ontario insurers refuse to write or renew coverage on homes with active knob and tube, and others apply higher premiums. A completed rewire with an ESA Certificate of Acceptance is the documentation insurers accept as proof the hazard is resolved.

Is knob and tube wiring illegal? Do I have to remove it? It is not illegal simply to have it. The pressure to replace usually comes from insurance and safety, not a legal ban. Active K&T is the concern; abandoned, disconnected K&T is often acceptable when documented.

Do I need a permit, and who handles it? Yes. All rewiring in Ontario requires an ESA permit and inspection, filed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor. EZSMART handles the application, the inspection, and the certificate. DIY electrical work of this kind is illegal and unsafe.

Do you have to tear open all my walls? No. We use cable-fishing techniques to route new wiring through existing cavities and keep access holes to a minimum, then leave them ready for patching. Full wall demolition is the exception, not the rule.

Is aluminum wiring dangerous, and do I need a full rewire? The risk is mainly at connections, not the wire itself. In many homes we can remediate with ESA-approved connectors and CO/ALR-rated devices rather than a full rewire. We assess and recommend the right approach.

Can you do a panel upgrade at the same time? Yes, and it is often the smart move. Bundling the panel upgrade with the rewire means one permit, one inspection, and one certificate for the whole system.

Will I lose power during the work? Usually only briefly and only on certain circuits. We keep most of the home powered and let you know in advance whenever a circuit needs to be shut off.

Facing an insurance deadline? Let’s fix it properly.

    FAQ
    FAQ
some most common question you have in your mind
    1
How fast can an electrician get to me in Toronto?

Most electrical calls in the Toronto area are answered within a few hours, and many electricians offer same-day service for urgent issues. If you're dealing with sparking outlets, a burning smell, or a full power outage, call immediately rather than waiting for an appointment.

    2
Do you offer emergency electrician services near me?

Yes, emergency electrical service is available for issues like power outages, tripped breakers that won't reset, and exposed wiring. These situations are treated as priority calls since they can pose safety risks.

    3
How much does it cost to hire an electrician near me?

Costs vary depending on the job — a simple outlet repair costs less than a full panel upgrade or rewiring project. Most electricians provide a free quote after a quick phone consultation or on-site assessment.

    4
Are your electricians licensed and ESA certified?

Yes, all work is performed by licensed electricians who follow Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) standards. Any work requiring a permit is filed and inspected properly, which matters for insurance and resale purposes.

    5
Can I find a same-day electrician near me for a panel upgrade?

Panel upgrades usually require scheduling since they involve permits and inspection, but initial consultations and quotes can often be arranged the same day you call.

    7
What should I do if my breaker keeps tripping?

A breaker that trips repeatedly is often a sign of an overloaded circuit or a wiring issue. Turn off the affected circuit and call an electrician rather than resetting it repeatedly, since this can be a fire risk if ignored.

    8
Do you work on older Toronto homes with knob and tube wiring?

Yes, older wiring systems like knob and tube are common in Toronto's older housing stock. These often need to be updated for insurance purposes, and an inspection can confirm what's needed.
