Why Is There a Popping Sound Coming From My Breaker Box?

A popping sound coming from your breaker box is never normal, and it should never be ignored. That sharp snap or crackle almost always means electricity is arcing across a loose or damaged connection — and arcing is one of the most common causes of house fires that start inside electrical panels.

The short answer: something inside is arcing

A popping or crackling noise from your breaker box means electricity is jumping across a small gap instead of flowing cleanly through a connection. Arcing generates temperatures well above 5,000°F — hot enough to melt copper and ignite the plastic parts of your panel in seconds. Turn off major appliances and call a licensed electrician right away.

The 5 most common causes

1. Loose wire connections. The number one cause. Screws that were slightly under-torqued when the panel was installed loosen over years of thermal cycling. 2. A failing breaker. Internal contacts inside the breaker itself wear out and start arcing under load. 3. Overloaded circuits. A breaker carrying more current than it is rated for heats up and pops as connections expand and contract.

4. Aluminum wiring at breaker terminals. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, loosening the connection over decades. 5. Moisture in the panel from a leaky wall or basement seepage, which corrodes bus bars and creates high-resistance faults. If your breaker also keeps tripping when a specific appliance turns on, the two symptoms are almost certainly linked.

Is a popping breaker box dangerous?

Yes. The Ontario Electrical Safety Report lists electrical distribution equipment — panels, breakers, and wiring — as one of the leading ignition sources for residential fires in Ontario. A panel that pops audibly is already showing physical damage on the inside, even if nothing looks wrong from the outside.

What to do right now

Do not open the panel cover. Live bus bars are exposed underneath it and homeowner-level tools will not protect you from an arc-flash event. Instead: unplug high-draw appliances (space heaters, portable AC units, large power tools), shut off the main breaker if you can reach it safely from outside the panel, and call a licensed electrician immediately.

If you smell burning plastic or see any smoke, leave the house and call 911 first.

When you need a panel replacement, not a repair

Some panels cannot be safely repaired — they need to be replaced. Watch for these: Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco, or Sylvania panels; any panel over 30 years old; visible rust or corrosion; repeated popping across multiple circuits. Expert tip

If the popping only happens when a specific appliance runs, the problem is usually a bad breaker on that circuit — not the whole panel. But have both checked. A single failing breaker often signals connection issues elsewhere in a panel of the same age, and replacing one bad breaker while ignoring the tired ones next to it is a fast way to end up back at square one in six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my breaker box popping?

Arcing at a loose connection or a failing breaker. Immediate inspection needed.

Is popping more serious than buzzing?

Yes. Popping means the arc is intermittent and strong enough to eject metal. Emergency.

Should I shut off the main?

If safely accessible and combined with other warning signs (smell, warmth), yes.

Can I open the panel to look?

No. Behind the deadfront is live 240V bus. Call a licensed contractor.

How urgent is this call?

Same day. Panel arcing rapidly progresses to internal fire.
