If your lights seem uneven, it is usually due to differences in bulb technology, voltage issues, or wiring configurations rather than a “problem” with the room itself. When one room is significantly brighter, it is typically because the light source or the circuit environment differs from the rest of your home.
This guide explains the common causes behind uneven lighting and how to troubleshoot them.
The most common reason for varying brightness is the use of different types of bulbs—such as mixing older Incandescent or CFL bulbs with newer, high-efficiency LEDs.
Lumen Differences: Even if bulbs look similar, they may have different “lumen” ratings (which measure actual brightness). A 60W-equivalent LED might produce 800 lumens, while a “daylight” LED of the same wattage might produce 1,200 lumens.
Color Temperature (Kelvin): Bulbs with a higher Kelvin rating (5000K “Daylight” vs. 2700K “Soft White”) appear significantly brighter and “bluer” to the human eye, even if the actual light output is the same.
If the lights in one room seem to flicker or brighten intensely, you may have a loose neutral wire.
What happens: In a standard 120V system, a loose neutral wire can cause an imbalance, leading to “over-voltage” on one side of a circuit. This can make bulbs in one room glow abnormally bright right before they burn out.
Safety Alert: According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), flickering lights or lights that change intensity are major warning signs of loose connections at the panel or in junction boxes. If you notice this, it is a fire hazard that requires a professional inspection.
If that specific room has a dimmer switch, it may be causing the brightness discrepancy.
Incompatible Switches: If you are using non-dimmable LED bulbs on a standard dimmer, they may not function at full capacity. Conversely, if the dimmer is calibrated differently than other rooms, it might be providing more power to the bulbs than expected.
The “Ghost” Effect: Sometimes, older dimmers allow a small amount of “leakage” current to pass through even when turned off, which can cause LEDs to glow faintly or behave erratically.
The physical housing of your light fixture significantly impacts how “bright” a room feels.
Reflectivity: A fixture with a polished chrome or white interior finish will reflect far more light than one with a dark bronze or matte finish.
Diffusers: If one room has open-style fixtures and the rest of your home uses frosted glass globes, the open fixtures will appear much brighter because there is no material to soften or disperse the light.
As a master electrician, I often see “brighter lights” in one room as the first symptom of a floating neutral. If the lights are noticeably brighter—almost intense—and then dim, do not wait. This is not a bulb issue; it is a serious electrical instability. When the neutral is loose, the voltage can spike far above 120V, which will damage your appliances and electronics, not just your light bulbs. If you suspect this, turn off the breaker for that room immediately and call a licensed professional to check the connections at your panel and the room’s receptacles.
