    You bought an EV or you are about to, and the next question is which charger belongs in your Toronto or GTA garage. The right answer depends on your daily driving, your panel capacity, and how future-proof you want to be. This guide walks through Level 1 vs Level 2, plug-in vs hardwired, amperage choices, and smart features so you can make the call before you shop.

    What type of EV charger do I need for my home?

    For most Ontario homeowners, a Level 2 hardwired charger at 40 or 48 amps on a dedicated 240V circuit is the right choice. It charges 5–10x faster than a standard outlet, handles any current EV, and works with load-management features that can avoid a panel upgrade. If your driving is very light or your electric service is very tight, Level 1 (a 120V outlet) sometimes covers daily needs — but most GTA households outgrow it within a year.

    Level 1 vs Level 2 at a glance

    Amperage: how big should your Level 2 be?

    • 16 amp on 20-amp circuit: minimum Level 2, adds ~15 km/hr. Rare choice today.
    • 32 amp on 40-amp circuit: common budget install, adds ~25 km/hr.
    • 40 amp on 50-amp circuit: sweet spot for most GTA homes, adds ~32 km/hr.
    • 48 amp on 60-amp circuit: maximum for hardwired residential, adds ~40 km/hr.

    Hardwired vs plug-in

    • Hardwired: cleanest install, supports up to 48 amps, no receptacle to fail. Requires a licensed contractor for both install and removal.
    • Plug-in (NEMA 14-50 receptacle): portable if you move, easy to replace the charger, limited to 40 amps continuous. Requires a licensed contractor for the receptacle.

    Connector type: J1772 vs Tesla NACS

    North American Level 2 chargers use two connector types:
