How to Check Continuity on a Switch or Wire
Checking continuity tells you whether an electrical path exists between two points — whether current can flow through a switch, wire, or device. A multimeter set to its continuity or resistance function is all you need. This guide walks through testing continuity safely on both switches and wires in a residential setting.
Tools You Need
- Digital multimeter (any basic model works)
- Non-contact voltage tester
- Screwdriver to access the switch or junction box
Safety First: De-Energize Before Testing
Continuity testing must be done with power off. Testing a live circuit with a multimeter in continuity mode can damage the meter and create a shock hazard. Always turn off the breaker for the circuit you are testing, then verify with a non-contact voltage tester that no voltage is present before touching any wires or terminals.
How to Test Continuity on a Switch
- Turn off the circuit breaker supplying the switch
- Remove the switch cover plate and pull the switch out of the box far enough to access the terminals
- Verify with a non-contact voltage tester that no voltage is present
- Set your multimeter to the continuity setting (indicated by a speaker or diode symbol) or the lowest ohms range
- With the switch in the OFF position, touch one probe to each terminal — the meter should show open circuit (no beep, OL, or high resistance)
- Flip the switch to ON and touch the same two terminals — you should hear a beep or read near zero ohms, confirming the switch makes a complete circuit when closed
- If the switch shows continuity in both positions or no continuity in either, the switch is faulty and needs replacement
How to Test Continuity on a Wire
- Disconnect both ends of the wire from any terminals
- Set the multimeter to continuity mode
- Touch one probe to each end of the wire
- A beep or near-zero ohms reading confirms the wire is continuous with no breaks
- No beep or an OL reading means the wire has an open break somewhere along its length
What the Readings Mean
- Beep or 0-2 ohms — good continuity, circuit path is complete
- OL or infinite resistance — open circuit, no path for current to flow
- Intermediate reading (e.g. 500 ohms) — high resistance in the path, which can indicate a loose or corroded connection
When to Call a Licensed Electrician
If you find a broken wire inside a wall, a switch that tests faulty while the wiring appears sound, or if you are not comfortable working near electrical panels, contact a licensed electrical contractor. In Ontario, work inside the panel, on service wiring, or involving new circuits requires an ESA permit and must be done by a licensed electrician.
