What Is the Safest Way to Change a Fuse?

Some Toronto and GTA homes, especially those that have not had a panel upgrade, still run on a fuse box instead of a breaker panel. A blown fuse is a routine event, but the safety sequence matters more than most homeowners realize — fuses sit in a live panel the same way breakers do, and the single most dangerous mistake is grabbing whatever fuse is on hand instead of matching the exact amp rating. This guide covers the safest correct sequence.

What is the safest way to change a fuse?

Stand on a dry surface, use one hand only (keep the other hand away from any grounded metal), remove the blown fuse by unscrewing it or pulling it straight out depending on type, and replace it with a fuse of the exact same amp rating — never higher. If the replacement blows again immediately, stop and call an ESA-licensed electrician rather than trying a second or third fuse. Repeated blowing means a real fault, not bad luck.

Step-by-step: the safe sequence

  1. Identify which fuse blew. Screw-type (Edison base) fuses show a visibly broken or discoloured metal strip through the small window on top. Cartridge fuses require a continuity check or visual inspection after removal since the break is hidden inside.
  2. Stand on a dry surface and keep your free hand away from metal pipes, the panel frame, or anything grounded while you work.
  3. Unplug or turn off major appliances on that circuit before restoring power, in case the blown fuse was caused by a startup surge rather than a fault.
  4. Remove the blown fuse. Screw-type: unscrew counter-clockwise like a light bulb. Cartridge: use a fuse puller tool, never your fingers, to pull it straight out of its clips.
  5. Confirm the amp rating printed on the blown fuse and select an exact replacement — 15A for 15A, 20A for 20A, never a higher rating to “stop it blowing.”
  6. Install the new fuse — screw clockwise until snug (not overtightened), or press the cartridge firmly into its clips.
  7. Restore the appliance loads gradually and watch for the new fuse blowing again.

Why matching the exact amp rating is non-negotiable

A fuse protects the wire behind it, not the appliance in front of it. Ontario fuse circuits are almost always wired with 14-gauge (15A rated) or 12-gauge (20A rated) copper, matched to a specific fuse size when the circuit was installed. Installing a 20A or 30A fuse on a 15A-rated 14-gauge circuit removes that protection — the wire can now carry more current than it is rated for without the fuse ever blowing, which is exactly the overheating scenario that leads to a fire. This single mistake, sometimes made out of frustration with a fuse that “keeps blowing,” is one of the most dangerous things a homeowner can do in an older Ontario home.

What to do if the fuse blows immediately again

A fuse that blows the instant you restore power (before you even plug anything back in) points to a short circuit somewhere on that branch — not a normal overload. Do not keep replacing fuses hoping the next one holds:

Screw-type vs cartridge fuses

  • Cartridge fuses: cylindrical, used for higher-amperage circuits like the range, dryer, or main disconnect. Require a fuse puller tool to remove safely and a continuity tester or ohmmeter to confirm which one has actually blown, since the break is not visible.

If your panel still uses old Edison-base sockets without Type S adapters, that is itself worth flagging to a licensed contractor — it is the setup that makes oversizing a fuse physically possible in the first place.
