If you don’t have a multimeter handy, you can often identify a blown fuse with a visual inspection. Fuses are designed as the “weak link” in an electrical circuit; when too much current flows through, a thin internal metal strip melts to break the connection and prevent a fire.
Here is how to check your fuses safely and effectively.
Many older homes and appliances use glass-tube fuses. These are the easiest to diagnose because they are transparent.
Look for a Broken Strip: Hold the fuse up to a bright light. You should see a thin metal wire running from one end to the other. If that wire is severed, melted in the middle, or missing, the fuse is blown.
Look for Discoloration: If the inside of the glass tube looks cloudy, blackened, or coated in a metallic “smoke,” it is a sure sign that the fuse blew during a significant power surge.
Some residential electrical panels (common in older Ontario homes) use circular “plug” fuses that screw in like light bulbs. These usually have a small glass or mica window on the face.
Clear vs. Dark: A good fuse will show a clear, bright metal element. A blown fuse will have a dark, charred, or shattered element inside that window.
Note: If the window is completely opaque (blackened), it indicates a very high-current short circuit occurred.
If you are dealing with a cartridge-style fuse (the solid, opaque tube-type often found in major appliances or HVAC disconnects), you can sometimes use the “shake” test.
Listen and Feel: Take the fuse out (ensure the power is completely off!) and give it a gentle shake near your ear.
The Result: If you hear a distinct “rattling” sound, the internal wire has snapped and is bouncing around inside the tube. If it is silent and feels solid, the internal element is likely still intact.
Crucially, never replace a fuse without knowing why it blew. A fuse is a symptom, not the root cause. If you replace a fuse and it blows immediately again, you have a hard short or an overloaded circuit.
Overload: You were running too many appliances on one circuit (e.g., a toaster, coffee maker, and microwave on one kitchen circuit).
Short Circuit: A wire has touched a grounded surface or another hot wire, or an appliance has an internal failure.
Before inspecting any fuse:
Turn off the main power: Never pull a fuse while the circuit is under load.
Use a puller: If the fuse is in a tight spot, use a plastic fuse puller. Never use metal pliers or a screwdriver, as you could accidentally bridge the connection or cause an arc.
Never “Bridge” a Fuse: Never wrap a blown fuse in aluminum foil or replace it with a wire. This removes the only safety mechanism protecting your home from fire.
As a master electrician, I have seen far too many houses with “oversized” fuses. If you have a 15-amp circuit, you must use a 15-amp fuse. Putting a 30-amp fuse in a 15-amp holder is a recipe for a house fire—the fuse will not blow when the wires in your walls get dangerously hot. If you find a fuse that is a higher rating than the wire can handle, get a professional to evaluate the circuit immediately.
