The terms “load” and “line” appear on outlets, switches, GFCI receptacles, and AFCI breakers — and using the wrong terminal for the wrong wire is one of the most common wiring errors that causes protection failures and code violations in Ontario homes. Understanding what each terminal is for, and why the distinction matters, is foundational to safe electrical work.
In residential wiring, “line” refers to the conductors that bring power from the panel to a device, and “load” refers to the conductors that carry power from that device onward to protect additional outlets or fixtures downstream. The distinction matters most on GFCI receptacles and AFCI breakers, where incorrect terminal use defeats the protection those devices provide.
The line terminals on a device receive the incoming hot and neutral conductors from the panel or from the previous device in the circuit.
The load terminals, when present, send protected power to additional outlets or fixtures downstream. On a GFCI receptacle, connecting downstream outlets to the load terminals extends GFCI protection to those outlets.
On a GFCI receptacle, reversing line and load means the GFCI face outlets and any downstream outlets will not be protected against ground faults — even though they may deliver power normally.
