And when something does go wrong — flickering lights, tripping breakers, that faint smell of hot plastic — the question becomes urgent. Is this a small repair, or does the whole house need rewiring? Recognizing the warning signs early saves money, prevents fires, and keeps insurance policies from being cancelled. This guide walks GTA homeowners through the signs that a house needs rewiring, when the signs are urgent, and what a professional assessment involves.
Short answer: age plus symptoms
Direct answer: any Ontario home built before 1990 with original wiring is a candidate for rewiring assessment. Combine that age with any electrical symptom (flickering, tripping, burning smell) and the rewire question becomes real. Modern homes (post-2000) rarely need full rewires; older homes with knob-and-tube or aluminum should be assessed at every service call.

Frequent breaker trips on the same circuit without a clear overload cause.
Flickering or dimming lights when large appliances start up.
Warm receptacles or switch plates — warm to the touch suggests loose connections or aluminum-copper interfaces failing.
Burning smell near outlets, switches, or the electrical panel.
Discoloured or melted device plates or receptacles — evidence of past arcing.
Only two-prong receptacles throughout the home — indicates no equipment ground.
Fuse box instead of breakers — old service that limits load and safety.
Aluminum wiring without CO/ALR remediation.
Knob and tube wiring anywhere in the home.
Insurance carrier refuses to renew — typically flagged for age, aluminum, or knob-and-tube.
Any three or more of these together is a strong signal to consult a licensed electrician for a full-home assessment.
Warning signs that require immediate action
Sparks or visible arcing at a device. Kill the breaker and call an electrician the same day.
Persistent burning smell. Do not ignore — there is heat somewhere in the wiring.
Tingling from metal appliances or plumbing. Bond issue; potentially life-threatening.
Smoke or discolouration around the panel. Serious — kill the main and evacuate.
Homes most likely to need rewiring
Toronto homes built before 1950: almost always knob and tube. Full rewire recommended.
Post-war Toronto and Etobicoke (1945-1960): transitioning from knob-and-tube to early cloth-jacketed NMD. Often needs full rewire.
1960s bungalows: older ungrounded copper wiring, no AFCI, undersized. Often benefits from full rewire.
1965-1975 homes: aluminum branch wiring era. Remediation or rewire required for insurance.
1970s-1980s homes: grounded copper but often 60 A or 100 A service; may need panel + partial rewire.
Post-1990 homes: modern copper with grounding. Usually only need updates for AFCI compliance or new circuits.
What a professional rewiring assessment involves
Panel inspection. Age, brand, capacity, condition. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels warrant replacement regardless of wiring condition.
Sample device inspections. Pull a few switches and receptacles to check terminals for heat damage.
Wiring identification. Copper, aluminum, knob and tube, or a mix.
Attic and basement inspection. Visible wiring condition, cable clamping, and any modifications.
Circuit mapping. Which loads are on which circuits; identifying overloaded branches.
Written report with recommendations, scope, and cost estimate.
The Electrical Safety Authority publishes homeowner guides on age-related rewire assessments. A written contractor report satisfies most insurance requirements.
Partial rewire vs full rewire
Direct answer: sometimes only certain circuits need replacement — the aluminum branch feeding one wing, the knob and tube in the attic, or the overloaded kitchen circuit. A partial rewire targets the problem areas and is cheaper than a full home rewire. A licensed contractor’s assessment should recommend the right scope.
Full rewire is warranted when (1) the entire home is aluminum or knob and tube, (2) the service panel is FPE or Zinsco, (3) multiple circuits are overloaded, or (4) insurance requires it.
