Outdoor landscape lighting enhances curb appeal, improves safety along pathways, and extends the usability of outdoor spaces after dark. If you’re planning a landscape lighting project, here is what the electrical installation actually costs in Ontario — and what the price does and does not include.
Outdoor landscape lighting installation by a licensed electrical contractor in Ontario starts at $65 per fixture for the labour and underground wiring. This price covers the installation of low-voltage wiring using underground-rated cables and the connection of each fixture — but does not include the light fixtures themselves or the transformer.
The fixtures (pathway lights, spotlights, uplights, step lights) and the low-voltage transformer are sourced and supplied separately. Your electrician can advise on compatible equipment, or you can supply your own fixtures and transformer for installation.
Not included: light fixtures, transformer, or any 120V line-voltage wiring from the house electrical panel to the transformer location (quoted separately if needed).
The per-fixture rate applies to the total number of lights being installed in the project. Larger installations with more fixtures are typically more efficient per unit because the contractor is already mobilized on-site.
Wiring runs that travel longer distances, cross hard surfaces like driveways or walkways, or require deeper trenching in difficult soil conditions will take more time and material — affecting the total project cost.
If there is no existing outdoor outlet or power source near the transformer location, a new 120V outdoor outlet will need to be installed first. This is separate work that requires an ESA permit and is priced in addition to the landscape lighting installation.
Low-voltage landscape lighting systems (12V or 24V) typically do not require an ESA permit on their own. However, if new 120V wiring is needed to power the transformer — such as adding a new outdoor outlet — that portion of the work does require an ESA permit and inspection.
