How to Properly Coil Extension Cords So They Don’t Tangle

Extension cords that are coiled and stored incorrectly develop kinks, internal wire damage, and insulation stress that shortens their usable life and creates fire hazards. Proper coiling technique preserves the cord’s geometry, keeps the insulation intact, and makes the cord tangle-free when it is next unrolled — which matters both for ease of use and for safety.

The Over-Under Coiling Technique

Professional electricians use over-under coiling, which alternates the direction of each loop to cancel out twist that builds up in simple circular coiling. This makes the cord fall out flat when unrolled.

  • First loop (over): Form a natural loop in the direction the cord wants to go.
  • Second loop (under): Flip your wrist inward as you bring the cord around in the opposite direction.
  • Alternate over and under for every subsequent loop.
  • Secure with a velcro strap or loose wrap. Do not use zip ties.
