How Do You Wire a Ceiling Fan with a Light Kit?

A ceiling fan with a light kit is a two-in-one appliance sharing one ceiling box, which is why the wiring trips up so many first-time DIYers. Get the black-black-blue combination right and you have independent switch control for the fan and the light; get it wrong and either the fan runs on the light switch, the light will not dim, or the pull chains do double duty for both loads. This guide walks GTA homeowners through how to wire a ceiling fan with a light kit safely, to Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and with the switching combinations most people actually want.

Understand what conductors you have in the box

Direct answer: check whether the ceiling box has 14/2 cable (one hot, one neutral, one ground) or 14/3 cable (two hots, one neutral, one ground). 14/2 gives you one switched hot that controls both the fan and the light together; 14/3 gives you two switched hots so the fan and light can be controlled independently at the wall.

  • 14/2 cable (one black, one white, one bare): only one wall-switched hot — fan and light share it, and you use pull chains to control each independently
  • 14/3 cable (black, red, white, bare): two wall-switched hots — the light and fan each get their own switch at the wall
  • Cable with no ground: stop and call a licensed electrician — the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires bonding on every fixture install

If you are adding a fan where only a light used to hang, and the switch box has only one switch, you either accept pull-chain control for one function or run new 14/3 cable and add a second switch. Cable runs are permit territory in Ontario — file the ESA Homeowner Wiring Notification before you energize anything.

The standard fan-with-light wiring: which lead is which

Direct answer: almost every ceiling fan with a light kit has four leads coming out of the top of the motor housing — black is fan hot, blue (or black-with-white-stripe) is light hot, white is neutral, and green or bare is ground. Wire the leads based on which type of switch control you want.

  1. Kill the breaker and verify dead with a non-contact tester at the ceiling box and at the switch.
  2. Confirm the ceiling box is fan-rated. If it is not, stop — our post on wobbling ceiling fans covers why a standard fixture box will not survive a running fan.
  3. Attach the fan bracket to the box using the machine screws provided. Do not use drywall anchors under any circumstances.
  4. Hang the fan on the bracket so both hands are free to wire.
  5. Bond first. Green fan lead to the bare copper conductor in the box plus the green screw on the bracket, using a marrette.
  6. Neutrals together. White fan lead + white light-kit lead + white supply neutral all under one marrette.
  7. Fan hot to switched hot #1. Black fan lead to the black conductor coming down from the wall switch (or the switched conductor in the ceiling box).
  8. Light hot to switched hot #2. Blue light-kit lead to the red conductor if you have 14/3, or to the same black lead if you only have 14/2 (both loads share the switch).
  9. Fold, mount, and test. Push conductors into the canopy, mount the fan, install blades and light shade, restore power, and test both switches.

Two-switch, one-switch, and remote setups

Direct answer: choose the switching layout before you buy hardware. Two-switch (14/3) is the cleanest and gives independent wall control. One-switch (14/2) is the most common in older GTA homes but needs pull chains. A remote or wireless dimmer conversion works with either wiring type but requires an LED-compatible light kit.

For a full-remote setup, most modern fans (Hunter, Hampton Bay, Kichler) ship with a receiver that hides in the canopy. The receiver takes the single black supply hot and provides both fan and light control wirelessly, which lets you skip the 14/3 upgrade in older homes.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Direct answer: the three mistakes we correct most on GTA service calls are (1) mounting the fan on a non-fan-rated box, (2) missing the ground bond, and (3) treating the blue light-kit lead as a neutral. Any of these fails an ESA inspection on the spot.

The Electrical Safety Authority requires ceiling fans and their light kits to be installed to the current Ontario Electrical Safety Code, including Section 30 (lighting equipment), Section 12 (wiring methods and box fill), and Section 10 (bonding). Skipping any of these turns a two-hour install into a two-visit service call.
