The distance between an electrical outlet and a kitchen sink is governed by the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) and enforced on every kitchen renovation or new construction. The rules are specific, measurable, and non-negotiable.

How Close Can an Outlet Be to a Kitchen Sink?

In Ontario, any outlet within 1.5 metres (approximately 5 feet) of a kitchen sink must be protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). Additionally, countertop outlets must be spaced so no point along the countertop is more than 900mm (about 3 feet) from a receptacle.

The GFCI Requirement: Within 1.5 Metres

Any receptacle within 1.5 metres of a kitchen sink must be GFCI-protected. This applies whether the outlet is on the countertop, on the wall above the countertop, or in a nearby island. A GFCI breaker in the panel can also satisfy the requirement for an entire circuit.

Countertop Spacing: The 900mm Rule

Kitchen countertop outlets must be spaced so that no point on any countertop section is more than 900mm from a receptacle. This prevents the use of extension cords across countertop surfaces. Each separate countertop section must meet the 900mm rule independently.
