Do I Have to Remove Drywall to Rewire a House?

The most feared cost of a rewire is not the wire or the labour — it is the drywall. Homeowners in Toronto and the GTA imagine a whole-house rewire as tearing every wall down to studs. Sometimes yes, often no. This guide covers when drywall has to come off during a rewire, when a skilled electrician can fish new cables without opening walls, and what actually drives the decision.

Do you have to remove drywall to rewire a house?

Not always. Experienced Ontario electricians can rewire many houses with only small, strategic drywall cuts rather than full removal. What determines the answer is the type of framing, the presence of insulation and fireblocking, the routing between the panel and each destination, and the specifics of the walls (plaster vs drywall, single vs double storey, finished vs unfinished basement). Full whole-house strip-to-studs rewires are only needed when the walls are already coming off for a gut renovation, when knob-and-tube runs through every joist bay, or when access is otherwise impossible. What favours a fish-through-walls approach

  • Unfinished basement gives the electrician a highway between the panel and every joist bay.
  • Unfinished attic gives top-down access to every wall from above.
  • Empty stud bays with no insulation and no fireblocking make top-down and bottom-up fishing straightforward.
  • Straightforward routing paths from panel to devices — no long horizontal runs through finished spaces.
  • Drywall walls (rather than plaster and lath) that patch cleanly if small cuts are made.
  • The circuit is being replaced with the same route (an old cable can be used as a pull to bring in the new one).

What forces walls to come open

  • Blown-in insulation in the attic that buries every top plate. Very common in older GTA homes.
  • Fireblocking between studs that blocks vertical fishing.
  • Balloon framing with old blocking or firestops.
  • Plaster-and-lath walls where every cut turns into a repair project.
  • Wall runs that need horizontal cable through many studs — fishing horizontally requires drilling each stud, which usually means access.
  • Panel relocation that requires new feeder runs across the house.
  • Extensive junction access for adding many new devices in a room being fully rewired.
  • Discovery of knob-and-tube or damaged wiring mid-project that expands the scope.

Even in these cases, opening the wall usually means a strip of drywall along the affected wall or a targeted cut at each device box, not the entire room stripped to studs.

Typical GTA rewire access patterns

  • Two-storey home with unfinished basement: pull new cable through the basement ceiling and up into the walls of the first floor via bottom-up fishing. Attic access handles second-floor ceilings and top-down runs.
  • Bungalow with unfinished attic: pull from the attic down into each stud bay. Minimal drywall damage.
  • Two-storey with finished basement and finished attic: more strategic cuts required. Sometimes a horizontal drywall strip along a top plate handles the second-floor runs.
  • Balloon-framed heritage home: often surprisingly easy to fish vertically once one bay is opened at the top and bottom.
  • Post-and-beam or unusual construction: case by case, often more invasive than expected.

How electricians minimize drywall damage

  • Use existing device boxes as pull points wherever possible.
  • Enlarge existing single-gang boxes to 2-gang or 3-gang where more devices are needed.
  • Cut small “key-hole” access points at top plates and bottom plates rather than long strips.
  • Fish new cable using the old cable as a pull-in guide.
  • Route around obstructions using the basement and attic as horizontal highways.
  • Coordinate with drywallers so any needed patches are minimal and quick.
  • Combine reno scope where possible so wall access being done for other reasons doubles as electrical access.

When you should just strip walls

  • You are gut-renovating the room anyway (new insulation, air-tightness upgrades, or major layout changes).
  • The house has active knob-and-tube through nearly every wall.
  • You are converting the space to a completely different use (single-family to legal duplex, adding a coach house, converting basement to a separate unit).
  • Multiple systems are being upgraded together (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) and the walls make more sense fully open.
  • Access-driven work would exceed the cost of full stripping and re-drywalling anyway.

The tipping point is usually around 15–20 access cuts. Beyond that number, full drywall replacement often costs the same or less than patching.

Permits, notifications, and timing

Expert tip from our ESA-licensed electricians

The single best predictor of a low-drywall-damage rewire in a GTA home is not the age of the house or the skill of the electrician — it is whether the basement is finished. An unfinished basement gives us a horizontal highway to every joist bay in the house, and we can bottom-fish almost every wall from underneath. A finished basement, especially one with a drop ceiling that hides insulation and blocking, doubles or triples the number of access cuts we need above. If you own an older Ontario home and are considering a future rewire, hold off on the basement drop ceiling for one more year and let the electrical work happen first. It is a small scheduling shift that saves a lot of patching.
