Do you have to remove drywall to rewire a house?
Not always. Experienced Ontario electricians can rewire many houses with only small, strategic drywall cuts rather than full removal. What determines the answer is the type of framing, the presence of insulation and fireblocking, the routing between the panel and each destination, and the specifics of the walls (plaster vs drywall, single vs double storey, finished vs unfinished basement). Full whole-house strip-to-studs rewires are only needed when the walls are already coming off for a gut renovation, when knob-and-tube runs through every joist bay, or when access is otherwise impossible. What favours a fish-through-walls approach
Unfinished basement gives the electrician a highway between the panel and every joist bay.
Unfinished attic gives top-down access to every wall from above.

Multiple systems are being upgraded together (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) and the walls make more sense fully open.
Access-driven work would exceed the cost of full stripping and re-drywalling anyway.

The single best predictor of a low-drywall-damage rewire in a GTA home is not the age of the house or the skill of the electrician — it is whether the basement is finished. An unfinished basement gives us a horizontal highway to every joist bay in the house, and we can bottom-fish almost every wall from underneath. A finished basement, especially one with a drop ceiling that hides insulation and blocking, doubles or triples the number of access cuts we need above.
