A 15 amp outlet has two parallel vertical slots and a round ground hole below. A 20 amp outlet looks similar, but one of the vertical slots has a small horizontal T-shape at its side. This T-slot allows a specifically designed 20 amp plug to fit, while still accepting standard 15 amp plugs. Most household appliances use 15 amp plugs, but a few higher-draw appliances use 20 amp plugs that will only fit into a 20 amp outlet.
A 20 amp outlet can safely support more continuous current draw than a 15 amp outlet, which is why 20 amp circuits are typically used for kitchen countertop outlets, garage outlets, and workshop outlets, where higher-draw devices are common. A 15 amp outlet is standard for bedrooms, living rooms, and other general use areas.
Installing a 20 amp outlet on a 15 amp circuit does not increase capacity, since the wire and breaker still limit the circuit to 15 amps. Doing so is also technically a code issue, since it suggests capacity the circuit does not actually have.
