How to Install a Conduit for Outdoor Wiring

How to Install a Conduit for Outdoor Wiring

Outdoor wiring in Ontario must be protected from physical damage and moisture. The Canadian Electrical Code requires that wiring installed outdoors in exposed locations be run in conduit rated for wet locations. The two most common conduit types for outdoor residential use are rigid PVC conduit (Schedule 40 or Schedule 80) and rigid metal conduit. PVC is easier to cut and work with, while rigid metal provides stronger physical protection in areas subject to impact.

Steps for Installing Outdoor Conduit

  • Plan the conduit route before purchasing materials — measure the run and add 10% for couplings and bends
  • For below-grade burial, use Schedule 40 PVC conduit with a minimum 300mm cover depth (more if under a driveway)
  • Use LB conduit bodies to make 90-degree turns at wall penetrations — never force conduit into a 90-degree bend at entry points
  • Seal all conduit entries into the building with weatherproof conduit fittings and silicone caulk to prevent moisture and pest entry
  • Pull wire through after conduit is fully installed — do not try to install conduit around already-run wire
  • Use wire rated for wet locations (such as THWN) inside conduit that may be exposed to moisture

Permit Requirements

Any new outdoor circuit requires an ESA permit in Ontario. The permit covers the circuit from the panel to the final device — whether that is an outlet, lighting fixture, or disconnect. Work without a permit is not inspected, which creates insurance and resale risk. A Licensed Electrical Contractor obtains the permit and calls for inspection at completion.

EZSMART installs outdoor wiring and conduit systems across Ontario for garages, sheds, EV chargers, and landscape lighting. Contact us for a quote on your outdoor electrical project.
