A loose wire in the breaker box is a fire hazard and must be addressed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor. Working inside the main service panel is dangerous — even with the main breaker turned off, the service entrance conductors connecting the utility to the panel remain energized at all times and cannot be de-energized without the utility disconnecting power at the meter. Do not attempt to tighten wires in the panel yourself unless you are a licensed electrician.
A Licensed Electrical Contractor will shut off the main breaker to de-energize the panel buses, identify the loose connection, and re-terminate the conductor using the correct torque. For aluminum service entrance conductors, anti-oxidant compound is used at the connection point. If a breaker shows heat damage or the bus bar is discoloured, the breaker or the panel section may need to be replaced — a visual inspection of the existing damage will determine the extent of repair needed. An ESA permit is required for repairs that involve replacing breakers or modifying circuit connections.
