In Ontario, an ESA electrical permit is generally valid for one year from the date of issuance, though the Electrical Safety Authority can extend permits under certain circumstances. If the work is not completed and inspected within the permit period, the permit may lapse and a new permit would be required. Licensed Electrical Contractors are responsible for ensuring the work progresses and inspection is obtained before the permit expires.
For residential projects, the ESA requires at least one inspection — typically after rough-in wiring is complete and before walls are closed, and a final inspection after the job is finished. The contractor calls for inspection at the appropriate stage. In some cases, a single final inspection is sufficient for smaller jobs. The ESA inspector reviews the work against the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and issues a Certificate of Inspection when everything is compliant.
A lapsed permit means the work may not have been inspected and cannot be formally closed. This can create problems when selling the home, as real estate lawyers and buyers may ask for inspection records. If work was done without a final inspection, the ESA can require the walls to be opened again for inspection, or may issue a notice of non-compliance. Resolving lapsed permits typically requires hiring a Licensed Electrical Contractor to complete and close the permit.
