Can I Add a Subpanel Myself?

A subpanel adds circuit capacity for a basement finish, a detached garage, or a home addition, and it is exactly the kind of project that tempts an ambitious Toronto or GTA homeowner to DIY. The legal answer is more permissive than most people expect; the practical answer is that this is one of the highest-risk jobs on the homeowner-exemption list. This guide covers both sides honestly.

Can I add a subpanel myself?

Under Ontario’s homeowner exemption, a homeowner can legally do electrical work, including installing a subpanel, on their own single-family primary residence — provided the work meets the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and an ESA notification is filed.
