Every Toronto or GTA renovator eventually runs into it: you pull the old outlet or switch out of a box and find that the cable inside was cut so short that the new device will not reach. Do not stretch it. Do not stress it. There is a correct, code-safe way to extend a short conductor in an existing box, and it is a fifteen-minute fix. This guide covers how to do it right in an Ontario home.
How to extend a wire that is too short in the box
To extend a short conductor in a device box, splice on a same-gauge same-colour pigtail inside the box using a listed wire nut or lever connector. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires that every conductor exit the sheath with at least 150 mm (6 inches) of free wire measured from where it enters the box, and that the device end have at least 75 mm to work with. If the existing wire is shorter, pigtailing to full length is the standard fix. Any splice must remain inside the enclosed box — no splicing behind drywall or inside the wall cavity.
Step-by-step: the code-safe extension
Kill power at the breaker. Verify with a non-contact voltage tester.
Cut a pigtail of the same gauge and colour as the short wire, at least 150 mm long.
Strip the existing wire and the pigtail to the length the connector manufacturer specifies (typically 1/2 to 5/8 inch).
Splice the two together with a listed wire nut sized for two conductors of that gauge, or a lever connector rated for both.
Verify with a tug test that neither conductor pulls out.
Repeat for each conductor in the box that is short (hot, neutral, and ground if separate).
Fold the splice neatly and set the device.
Verify the device works and the outlet reads correctly with a plug-in tester.
What the code actually says about free conductor length
The OESC requires each conductor entering a device box to have a minimum free length available for termination. The exact rule is 150 mm (6 inches) of free conductor measured from where it emerges from the cable sheath, with at least 75 mm extending outside the box face where the device will be installed. A wire that fails this rule is a code defect and must be corrected before a device is installed, whether by extending it via pigtail or by opening the wall to bring more cable in.
When to pigtail versus when to open the wall
Pigtail is fine when: the short is minor, the box is otherwise sound, and you can maintain the free-length rule after splicing.
Open the wall when: the cable is damaged beyond a stripped short (nicked, charred, or scorched), the box itself is too small for the added splice volume, or the cable enters at a point that will not accept the new pigtail without stress.
Consider a box extender ring if the box is nearly full and adding pigtails would exceed box fill. This adds 15–25 mm of usable depth without opening the wall.

What NOT to do with a short wire
Do not stretch or force a short wire onto the device terminal. Stressed terminations loosen over time and arc.
Do not use electrical tape as a splice in place of a proper connector.
Do not bury a splice under the device inside a stuffed box — verify box fill first.
Do not use undersized connectors. Match the wire nut or lever connector to the gauges and count.
Do not skip torque-checking when landing the pigtail on the device.
Special case: no ground wire in an older box
Older Ontario homes sometimes have device boxes wired with a two-conductor cable and no ground. Extending the existing conductors is straightforward, but adding a new grounded device on a two-wire circuit is a separate compliance conversation. Options include installing a GFCI receptacle with the No Equipment Ground label (allowed by code in this specific case), or running a new grounded circuit from the panel. When to hire a licensed contractor
You are not sure whether the box is code-compliant to begin with.
You suspect the cable insulation is damaged, charred, or nicked.
The box is in a rental or non-owner-occupied property (homeowner exemption does not apply).
The circuit involves a multi-wire branch, subpanel feeder, or higher-amperage load.
You need an ESA notification for the broader project.
Previous installer cut the cable jacket too far back into the box.
Multiple device swaps over decades trimmed the conductor each time.
Old aluminum or damaged conductor end was cut back and never re-fed.
Cable was pulled through the box on a tight bend and never had proper free length.
Drywall was replaced and the finished surface changed the effective depth.
