What Is the Difference Between a 120V and 240V Breaker?
Every Ontario home has both 120V and 240V circuits, protected by different types of breakers in the same panel. Homeowners often ask which is which, whether they can swap one for the other (spoiler: no), and how to tell what an appliance needs. This guide covers the practical difference between a 120V and a 240V breaker in a Toronto or GTA home, when each is required, and how to spot the two apart in your panel.
Difference between a 120V and 240V breaker
A 120V breaker (single-pole) occupies one slot in the panel and connects to one hot conductor plus neutral. It supplies the standard 120V used by lights, TVs, phone chargers, and most household outlets. A 240V breaker (double-pole) occupies two adjacent slots, has an integrated handle, and connects to both hot bus phases at once, supplying 240V to loads like electric dryers, ranges, hot tubs, EV chargers, and central AC. The physical size, wiring, and application are all different.
How Ontario homes get both 120V and 240V from the same service
Residential service in Ontario is single-phase 120/240V split-phase. The utility delivers two hot conductors plus a neutral. Between either hot and neutral is 120V. Between the two hots is 240V. The 120V (single-pole) breaker
Occupies one panel slot. Skinny, single handle.
Rated 15 or 20 amps in typical residential use. Occasionally 30 amps for specific loads.
Terminals: one hot conductor on the breaker terminal; neutral lands on the neutral bar; ground on the ground bar.
Serves 120V outlets, lighting circuits, bathroom fans, refrigerators, most kitchen small appliances, and the like.
Standard receptacles (NEMA 5-15R or 5-20R) match a 15- or 20-amp 120V circuit.
Occupies two adjacent panel slots. Wider body, single tied handle.
Common ratings: 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 amps for typical residential loads. Higher ratings for EV chargers and hot tubs.
Terminals: two hot conductors, one on each pole terminal. Neutral only if the appliance requires a 120V control component (as with some dryers and ranges). Ground on the ground bar.

Doubling the voltage halves the current required for the same wattage, which allows smaller wire, less voltage drop, and less heat. A 4,800 W load at 120V would draw 40 amps; the same load at 240V draws 20 amps. That is why every heavy-draw appliance in a Canadian home runs on 240V.
Electric dryer: typically 30-amp 240V.
Electric range or wall oven: typically 40 or 50 amp 240V.
Central AC: depends on tonnage; commonly 30 or 40 amp 240V.
Water heater (electric): typically 20 or 30 amp 240V.
Count slots the breaker occupies. One slot = 120V single-pole. Two slots = 240V double-pole.
Check the handle. Two skinny separate handles side-by-side = two independent 120V circuits. One wider handle spanning two slots = 240V.
Check the amperage number on the breaker face. Higher amperages (30+) are almost always double-pole.

“I can just swap a single-pole for a double-pole.” No. The wiring, cable size, and outlet all have to change too.
“A 240V circuit is dangerous, a 120V one is fine.” Both are lethal under the wrong conditions. 240V does not mean twice as dangerous, but it does mean the fault current is bigger.
“I can run 240V on any pair of 120V circuits.” Only if they come from opposite bus phases. Same phase = 0V between the two hots. Wrong.
“I can convert my dryer receptacle to a regular outlet.” Only by pulling new appropriate cable and installing a new breaker. Not a plug swap.
“A 240V circuit doesn’t need a ground.” It does. Every OESC-compliant circuit needs a proper ground path.
Common reasons Toronto and GTA homeowners add a new 240V circuit include:
Level 2 EV charger install.
Converting a gas dryer to electric.
Adding a hot tub or pool heater.
Installing an induction range where the kitchen previously had gas or a lower-draw electric.
Upgrading to a heat pump or a mini-split.
Setting up a workshop with 240V tools.
Any of these requires a licensed contractor to run appropriate cable, install the correct double-pole breaker, terminate the outlet or hardwired connection, and file an ESA notification. The single most common 240V circuit mistake we see in the GTA is a homeowner or handyman assuming a 240V circuit is just “two 120V circuits stuck together.” It is not. The two hots must come from opposite bus phases in the panel or the circuit will supply zero volts, and even when the phases are right, the neutral and ground requirements depend on the appliance. Any 240V install — for a dryer, range, EV, or hot tub — is a job for an ECRA/ESA-licensed contractor working under a proper notification. It is the fastest way to get it right the first time and avoid an expensive rework.
