An AFCI breaker, or arc fault circuit interrupter, is a specialized breaker designed to detect and cut power to a circuit when it senses the specific electrical signature of arcing faults in wiring. Arcing faults are a leading cause of electrical fires, which is why AFCI protection is increasingly required in modern residential construction. Arcing faults occur when electricity jumps across a small gap in wiring, such as a loose connection or damaged wire insulation, generating significant localized heat. Standard breakers may not trip during these events because the total current draw is still within normal range, but the arcing itself can cause fires over time. AFCI breakers detect the unique electrical signature of arcing and cut power before the arcing can cause damage.
Under current Ontario Electrical Safety Code, AFCI protection is generally required for most residential branch circuits in bedrooms and living spaces, particularly in new construction and significant renovations. Older homes without recent electrical updates may not have AFCI protection, though it can be retrofitted during panel upgrades or other electrical work.
For older homes with aluminum wiring, aging connections, or general electrical concerns, adding AFCI protection is one of the more valuable safety upgrades, since it directly addresses arcing fault fire risk that older systems are more prone to. Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician and, where required, permitted through the Electrical Safety Authority.
Can AFCI breakers be added to an existing panel?

Do AFCI breakers trip more often than standard breakers?
