Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Water is a conductor — not as efficient as copper, but effective enough to carry voltage across wet surfaces, through the body, or between an energized outlet and a grounded surface. Using water near electrical outlets creates shock and electrocution risk that depends on how close the water is, whether outlets are GFCI-protected, and whether the circuit is currently active.
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets and breakers are required by the Ontario Electrical Safety Code in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor locations. A GFCI detects the small current imbalance caused by a ground fault and trips within milliseconds — fast enough to prevent electrocution in most cases. However, GFCI protection is only effective if it is installed, tested, and functional. Many older homes have unprotected outlets in bathrooms and kitchens where water contact is likely.
EZSMART installs and tests GFCI outlets and breakers across Ontario. If you are unsure whether your wet-area outlets are GFCI-protected, contact us for an inspection and upgrade.
