How to Wire a Baseboard Heater to a Thermostat?

Electric baseboard heaters are common supplemental or primary heat in Toronto and GTA homes, and every one of them needs a thermostat wired into the circuit — either a built-in unit on the heater itself or a wall-mounted line-voltage thermostat controlling one or more heaters. This guide covers how that wiring actually works, why it is fundamentally different from a furnace thermostat, and where the line sits between understanding it and doing it yourself.

How to wire a baseboard heater to a thermostat

A baseboard heater thermostat is a line-voltage device, not the low-voltage 24V thermostat used with a gas furnace. It switches the full 120V or 240V circuit feeding the heater directly, which means the thermostat itself carries real current and must be rated for the heater’s wattage. A single-pole thermostat switches one leg on a 120V circuit; a double-pole thermostat switches both legs on a 240V circuit, which is standard for most baseboard heaters. Wiring this correctly, and sizing the breaker and cable to match, is licensed contractor work in Ontario — not a like-for-like device swap in most cases.

Why baseboard thermostats are different from furnace thermostats

A smart or programmable thermostat for a gas furnace switches a tiny 24V control signal that tells the furnace to fire — the actual heating current never passes through the thermostat. A baseboard heater has no separate furnace; the heating element draws its full current directly through whatever switches it. That means the thermostat itself is rated in amps and watts, not just a control signal, and picking an undersized thermostat for the heater’s load is a genuine fire risk, not just a compatibility issue.

The typical wiring layout

  • 240V single heater, wall thermostat: two hots from the breaker land on the thermostat’s line terminals, two hots leave the thermostat’s load terminals to the heater. A double-pole thermostat breaks both legs.
  • 240V multiple heaters, one thermostat: the thermostat’s load side feeds a junction that splits to each heater, with the thermostat sized to handle the combined wattage of every heater it controls — this is where undersizing most often happens.
  • Built-in thermostat on the heater itself: no separate wall device; the heater’s internal thermostat switches its own circuit directly. Simpler wiring but loses the convenience of a wall-mounted control.
  • Smart or programmable line-voltage thermostats exist and work the same way electrically, just with added scheduling and sometimes app control.

Sizing the circuit correctly

Every baseboard heater has a wattage rating on its nameplate. The circuit, breaker, and thermostat all need to be sized against the total connected wattage, with margin for continuous-load derating:

  • Total the wattage of every heater on the circuit.
  • Divide by 240V to get amps, then apply the continuous-load factor the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires for heating loads.
  • Match wire gauge and breaker size to that calculated amperage — typically 12-gauge on a 20-amp circuit for smaller heater combinations, heavier gauge for larger runs.
  • Confirm the thermostat itself is rated for at least that same amperage — wall thermostats are commonly rated up to 22 amps at 240V, but always check the specific model.

What is homeowner-friendly and what is not

  • Like-for-like thermostat swap on an existing dedicated circuit, same voltage and current rating, in your own primary residence: generally within the homeowner exemption.
  • Adding a heater to an existing thermostat circuit, upsizing wire, or installing a new circuit for a new heater: alteration work requiring an ECRA/ESA-licensed contractor and an ESA notification.
  • Any work in a rental, condo, or non-owner-occupied property: licensed contractor only, no homeowner exemption applies.

Common mistakes on baseboard thermostat wiring

  • Undersized thermostat for combined heater wattage — the single most common failure we correct, and the one most likely to cause a fire.
  • Using a single-pole thermostat on a 240V circuit — leaves one leg permanently live even when the thermostat is off.
  • Mounting the thermostat too close to the heater or a cold exterior wall, which throws off its temperature sensing and causes overheating or underheating of the room.
  • Skipping the continuous-load derating when sizing the breaker, leaving no safety margin under sustained winter operation.
