How to Use a Wire Nut Correctly

How to Use a Wire Nut Correctly

Wire nuts (also called twist-on connectors or Marrette connectors) are the most common method for joining electrical conductors in junction boxes and devices across Ontario. Using them correctly prevents loose connections, arcing, and fires. The right wire nut for the job depends on the number of conductors being joined and their gauge.

How to Install a Wire Nut Correctly

  • Strip each conductor to the correct length — check the wire nut manufacturer’s chart on the packaging, typically 11-15mm for most residential wire nuts
  • Hold all conductors parallel with ends flush, then twist the wire nut clockwise until it is firm and snug — the nut threads grip the conductors and twist them together
  • After installation, tug each wire firmly — if any conductor pulls out, the connection is inadequate and must be redone
  • For solid conductors, pre-twisting the wires before applying the nut gives a more reliable mechanical bond; for stranded wire, do not pre-twist
  • Select the correct size: small yellow or red nuts for two 14 AWG wires, larger red or orange for 12 AWG combinations — never mix very different gauges in a single nut

Common Mistakes

  • Under-tightening: the nut spins but the conductors do not rotate together — the connection will loosen over time
  • Wrong size: too small a nut leaves conductors exposed; too large a nut does not grip adequately
  • Mixing aluminum and copper conductors in a standard wire nut without anti-oxidant compound and an AL/CU-rated connector — this creates a fire hazard at the connection point
  • Leaving exposed copper past the end of the nut after installation — trim conductors or use a larger nut

EZSMART electricians use properly rated connectors for all wiring types. Contact us for residential wiring, panel work, or any electrical project across Ontario.
