How to Properly Torque Electrical Lugs

Electrical lugs are the large screw-style connectors used to terminate heavy cables in panels, meters, and equipment. Under-torqued lugs cause loose connections that heat up and eventually fail. Over-torqued lugs can crack the conductor or damage the lug itself. Proper torque is one of the most important steps in any electrical installation involving lugs, and it is a code requirement in Ontario.

Why Torque Matters

A loose lug connection creates resistance at the termination point. Resistance generates heat. Heat causes the insulation and surrounding components to degrade, which leads to arcing, melted wiring, and electrical fires. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires that lugs be torqued to the manufacturer’s specified value, which is usually printed on the equipment nameplate or in the installation manual.

Tools Required

  • Torque screwdriver or torque wrench — sized for the fastener type (hex, flat, or Robertson head)
  • Correct bit or socket for the lug screw head
  • Manufacturer’s torque spec (found on the equipment label or documentation)

Finding the Correct Torque Value

Torque specs vary by manufacturer, lug size, and conductor size. Common residential panel lug torque values range from 35 to 250 inch-pounds, depending on the size. Always look for the spec on the equipment itself first. If the label is missing, the manufacturer’s installation documentation will specify the value. Never guess or use feel alone — always use a calibrated torque tool.

How to Torque an Electrical Lug

  1. Verify power is off and confirmed with a non-contact voltage tester before working near any lug
  2. Prepare the conductor: strip only the length specified by the lug manufacturer, typically marked on the lug body as a strip gauge
  3. Insert the conductor fully into the lug — ensure no insulation is inside the lug barrel
  4. Hand-tighten the lug screw until snug
  5. Set the torque wrench to the manufacturer’s specified value
  6. Apply torque in a smooth, steady motion until the torque tool clicks or signals the set point
  7. Do not continue turning after the torque is reached
  8. For two-bolt lugs, torque both bolts to the specified value in alternating passes

Re-Torquing After Initial Installation

Aluminum conductors require re-torquing after the first few thermal cycles because aluminum work-hardens and the connection can loosen slightly. Inspect and re-torque aluminum terminations 30 to 90 days after initial installation where accessible. Copper conductors are more stable but should still be verified at the first scheduled maintenance interval.
