How Much Does It Cost to Add an Outlet in Ontario?

How Much Does It Cost to Add an Outlet in Ontario?

Adding an electrical outlet is one of the most common requests homeowners and business owners make to licensed electrical contractors. Whether you need a new plug in a room that’s short on receptacles, or you’re adding outlets as part of a larger renovation, understanding the cost upfront helps you plan your project properly. Here’s what electrical outlet installation actually costs in Ontario.

How Much Does It Cost to Add an Outlet in Ontario?

Outlet Installation as a Standalone Service

Standalone service: $200 including up to 2 receptacles tapped from an existing circuit. Covers labour and materials in a finished space.

Outlets Added as Part of a Larger Project

$75 per outlet when added as part of a larger project (panel upgrade, renovation, or other service).

What Affects the Cost of Adding an Outlet?

  • Existing circuit availability — tapping an existing circuit is cheaper than running a new dedicated circuit
  • Wall finish — finished drywall takes longer than open-stud spaces
  • Distance from panel — longer runs add material and labour cost
  • Outlet type — GFCI, AFCI, USB combo, or 240V receptacles cost more than standard 15A/20A

Do I Need a Permit to Add an Outlet in Ontario?

Generally yes. Adding a new outlet to an existing circuit requires an ESA permit under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. A licensed electrical contractor handles the permit process on your behalf. Only licensed contractors can legally perform electrical work on residential or commercial properties in Ontario.
