Older Ontario homes wired with two-wire circuits (hot and neutral only, no ground conductor) can be brought up to acceptable safety standards using GFCI protection. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code and the Canadian Electrical Code permit the use of GFCI-protected outlets as an alternative to rewiring when grounding conductors are absent. A GFCI breaker or GFCI outlet at the first position in the circuit provides ground-fault protection for all downstream outlets, even without a ground wire present.
When a GFCI device is used in place of grounding, each ungrounded outlet must be labeled “No Equipment Ground” — labels are typically included with GFCI devices. The GFCI protects against ground faults by detecting current imbalance between hot and neutral, which provides protection equivalent to a grounded circuit for shock hazard purposes. However, it does not provide an equipment ground for sensitive electronics or for appliances that depend on the ground for surge suppression.
