Can You Plug a Space Heater Into an Extension Cord?

You should not plug a space heater into an extension cord. Space heaters are high-draw appliances that typically draw 1,200–1,500 watts (10–12.5 amps) continuously. Most household extension cords are not rated for sustained loads at this level, and using one creates a serious overheating and fire risk.

Why Extension Cords Fail With Space Heaters

• A typical light-duty extension cord (16 AWG) is rated for 13A maximum but is not designed for continuous draw — a space heater running for hours is continuous use, not intermittent
• Extension cords coiled or bundled together cannot dissipate heat — resistance heating builds in the coil and can ignite the cord or nearby materials
• The plug-to-receptacle connection at the extension cord joints is a weak point — these connections heat up under sustained high current, potentially arcing or igniting
• Many space heater manufacturers explicitly void the warranty if the unit is used with an extension cord

The Safe Alternative

Space heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. If the only available outlet is too far away, the solution is to add an outlet where it is needed — not to run an extension cord. If you are using a space heater because your home’s permanent heating is inadequate, consult a licensed electrician about adding baseboard heaters or another permanent heating solution on a dedicated circuit.
