You cannot mix 12-gauge and 14-gauge wire on the same circuit if the circuit is protected by a 20-amp breaker. A 14-gauge wire is only rated for 15-amp circuits. Connecting 14-gauge wire to a 20-amp circuit creates a fire hazard — the breaker will not trip until 20 amps are flowing, but the wire can overheat at lower current levels than that. This is one of the most dangerous wiring mistakes in residential electrical work.
In some older homes, a 20-amp circuit may have been extended at some point using 14-gauge wire. This is a code violation. If you discover mixed gauges during a renovation or inspection, the circuit must be corrected — either by replacing the 14-gauge sections with 12-gauge, or by reducing the breaker to 15 amps and ensuring that 20-amp receptacles are not used on a 15-amp circuit.
There is one limited scenario where smaller wire is acceptable: a short pigtail at a device on a larger-wire circuit. For example, a device rated at 15 amps can be connected with a short 14-gauge pigtail to a 12-gauge circuit, provided the pigtail is within the outlet box and the overcurrent protection for the branch circuit is 15 amps or less. This is a narrow exception and does not apply to extending runs.
