    Can I Plug an EV Charger Into a Dryer Outlet?

    Every Toronto or GTA EV owner eventually looks at the dryer outlet in the laundry room and wonders: can I just plug the car in there? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and there are real rules. This guide covers exactly when a dryer outlet works for EV charging, what adapters exist, and why the smarter answer is usually a dedicated charger install.

    Can I plug an EV charger into a dryer outlet?

    Physically yes with the right adapter, but you should not share the dryer circuit with an EV charger. A dryer outlet is a NEMA 14-30 (30-amp) receptacle, and portable Level 2 EV chargers designed to plug into 14-30 exist. However, running both the dryer and the EV simultaneously overloads the 30-amp breaker, and no dryer outlet in Ontario should be assumed to be reserved just for the EV. The proper answer is a dedicated 14-50 or hardwired circuit for the charger.

    Understanding the outlet types

    • NEMA 14-30: the standard 4-prong dryer outlet. 30 amps at 240V. Adds ~20 km/hr of range at 24A charging.
    • NEMA 14-50: the classic RV outlet, also used for EV charging. 50 amps at 240V. Adds ~30 km/hr at 40A.
    • NEMA 6-30 or 6-50: older 3-prong 240V outlets. Not always suitable for modern EV without adapter.
    • Hardwired Level 2: no plug at all, direct connection to the charger.

    Dryer outlets in Canadian homes built after ~2000 use NEMA 14-30. Older installations may have 3-prong 10-30 which needs upgrading before use.

    What the OESC and manufacturer specs say

    The Ontario Electrical Safety Code allows sharing a circuit between two appliances only when both cannot run simultaneously, or when a listed load-management device manages the shared load. Most portable EV chargers do not include such a device by default. Manufacturers typically warn against sharing circuits.

    Continuous 24-amp EV charging plus even a moderate dryer load exceeds the 30-amp breaker capacity, causing nuisance trips or worse.

    Options if you want to use the dryer outlet

    • Manual switching. Only ever plug in one at a time. Requires discipline.
    • Splitter with interlock: listed devices (e.g., DryerBuddy, NeoCharge) that switch between dryer and EV automatically. Approved solution when installed correctly.
    • Portable EV charger with 14-30 plug. Common models include Grizzl-E, Mustart, and Tesla mobile connector with adapter.
    • Charge at reduced amperage. Set the EV charger to 24 amps max on a 30-amp breaker.

    Any of these should be discussed with an ESA-licensed contractor to confirm compliance with the current OESC.

    Why a dedicated circuit is usually the right answer

    • Faster charging. 40 or 48 amps versus 24 amps on the dryer circuit.
    • No conflict with laundry. Both run whenever needed.
    • Longer outlet life. Dryer outlets are not designed for continuous EV charging cycles.
    • Panel capacity respected. A load calc ensures the circuit fits your service.
    • Insurance and resale. A proper dedicated EV circuit adds value and clarity.

    The one-time install cost is often within a few hundred dollars of buying a splitter device plus a portable charger.

    When the dryer outlet approach makes sense

    • Renters who cannot install a dedicated circuit.
    • Occasional overnight charging where the dryer is guaranteed off.
    • Temporary solutions while planning a proper install.
    • Panels with zero spare capacity where an upgrade is planned but not yet done.

    For anyone owning the home long-term, plan the dedicated circuit.

    Costs compared

    • Portable EV charger with 14-30 plug: $400–$700 CAD.
    • Splitter/interlock device: $300–$500 CAD.
    • Dedicated 14-50 receptacle install: $800–$1,500 CAD in the GTA depending on cable run.
    • Hardwired Level 2 charger + install: $1,300–$3,000 CAD total.

    Expert tip from our ESA-licensed electricians

    If you are planning to use a dryer outlet as an interim EV solution while saving for a proper install, at least add a listed splitter/interlock device so you cannot accidentally run both at once. In our GTA calls, the melted dryer outlets we replace are almost always ones where the homeowner assumed they would remember to unplug the dryer before charging — and one Tuesday, they did not. The splitter is $300 of insurance that lets you sleep at night until the dedicated circuit is installed.

    Do all EVs work with a dryer plug?

    Can I charge my EV and run the dryer at the same time?

    Is a NEMA 14-50 outlet better?

    Do I need a permit for a splitter device?

    What if my dryer outlet is a 3-prong 10-30?

    Older 3-prong dryer outlets are ungrounded. Upgrade to a proper 4-prong 14-30 or dedicated EV circuit before use.
