Can I Plug an EV Charger Into a Dryer Outlet?

Can I Plug an EV Charger Into a Dryer Outlet?

Physically, some EV chargers can be adapted to plug into a 240V dryer outlet (NEMA 14-30 or NEMA 10-30), and some older Level 2 chargers include adapters for this purpose. However, doing so is not recommended and may be against the terms of your EV charger’s warranty and the Ontario Electrical Code in most cases.

Why It Is Problematic

  • Dryer circuits are typically 30A — EV Level 2 chargers sized for a 50A circuit will draw more than the outlet and wire are rated for, causing overheating
  • A 30A dryer circuit is wired with 10 AWG cable — charging at the full rate of a 40A or 48A EVSE exceeds the wire’s rating
  • Dryer outlets are not rated for continuous use at their full amperage — EV charging is continuous by definition (typically 4–12 hours), which stresses the receptacle and plug connections in ways that a dryer’s intermittent cycles do not
  • Sharing the dryer circuit between the dryer and the charger is not permitted — two high-draw appliances cannot share one circuit
  • The Ontario Electrical Code requires a dedicated circuit for EV charging equipment — an ESA permit is required for any new 240V circuit

The Right Solution

A dedicated 240V circuit sized for your EV charger — typically 40A or 50A for a Level 2 EVSE — is the safe and code-compliant solution. EZSMART installs EV charger circuits and EVSE units across Ontario, handles ESA permits, and ensures the installation passes inspection. Contact us for an EV charging installation quote.
