Can Electrical Wires Touch Plumbing Pipes?

Electrical wires can run near plumbing pipes in the same wall or ceiling cavity, but direct contact between electrical conductors and metal plumbing pipes creates hazards that the Ontario Electrical Code addresses through separation and bonding requirements.

The Hazard: Grounding Through Plumbing

• Metal water pipes are conductive and connect to the earth through buried supply lines — they are part of the electrical grounding system in older homes
• If a live conductor contacts a metal pipe due to insulation failure, the pipe becomes energized — anyone touching it can receive a shock
• In homes with mixed metal and plastic plumbing, the grounding continuity through piping can be broken, creating unpredictable fault paths

Ontario Electrical Code Requirements

• NMD-90 cable running alongside or across pipes must be protected from mechanical damage — pipes with sharp edges, vibration, or movement can abrade cable sheathing over time
• Where cables run through holes in framing near pipes, the cable must be protected by bushings or grommets if the hole edge could damage the insulation
• Metal water pipes and gas piping must be bonded to the electrical ground — this limits voltage differences and provides a low-impedance fault path, but is not a substitute for proper conductor routing
• Cables should not be supported by or attached to plumbing pipes — use proper cable straps and supports

In practice, wires and pipes share wall cavities constantly without issue when both are properly installed. Problems arise when insulation fails, pipes leak onto conductors, or cables are routed across sharp pipe edges.
