Can an Overloaded Circuit Cause a Fire?
Yes. An overloaded circuit is one of the most common causes of residential electrical fires in Canada. An overload occurs when the total current drawn by devices on a circuit exceeds the circuit breaker’s rated capacity. The breaker is designed to trip before the wire overheats, but if the breaker is faulty, incorrectly sized, or bypassed, the excess current heats the wire’s insulation until it ignites.
How Overloads Lead to Fire
- Wire insulation has a maximum temperature rating — sustained overload heats the conductor above this rating, degrading insulation over time and eventually causing it to crack, arc, or ignite
- In walls and ceilings, burning insulation can ignite wood framing before any visible signs appear at the outlet or device
- A breaker that is worn or has been “fixed” by stuffing a coin or oversized breaker in its place will not trip — the wire becomes the fuse
- Extension cords used as permanent wiring are a frequent overload source — they are not rated for in-wall loads and overheat under sustained draw
Signs of an Overloaded Circuit
- Breaker trips repeatedly when multiple appliances are in use
- Outlets or switch plates feel warm or hot to the touch
- Flickering or dimming lights when a high-draw appliance starts
- Burning smell near outlets, panels, or in a room without an obvious source
